"My working ritual is to set up my palette, clear my mind and put on my walkman, knowing that Radio 4 will veer me away from being over-analytical about the painting on my easel. I paint people because we are fascinating, so whether it is the sound of John Humphries thrashing a politician or the laughter on Just A Minute, I am happily distracted. By working to Radio 4, my brain absorbs current events while something else gets on with the painting. The finished picture is often a surprise that reflects my understanding of the world that is channeled through my headset. It’s a great partnership."
