RUN DMC(1984)
Twenty years since Run DMC released their eponymous debut album and their influence in the hip hop world can still be felt. Not content with simply toasting the mic over happy go lucky bass riffs, as many of their hip-hop contemporaries were doing, this release marked a notable turning point for the world of rap. The beats were hard and forceful, as were the lyrics, whereas the production borrowed a lot from the world of hard rock - while Jam Master Jay furiously scratched over the whole thing.

KING OF ROCK (1985)
Picking up where their debut left off, King of Rock emphasised the group's hard rock influences, but it's far from being a rock album. Bouncng bravado heavy lyrics off one another like no-one else could, Run DMC had made a clever party album that was a lot tougher than most rock and metal records of 1985.

RAISING HELL (1986)
By now RUN DMC were ready for the mainstream, and more accurately the mainstream was ready for a crossover rap record. Produced by the now legendary Rick Rubin and Russell Simmonds, Raising Hell went on to sell three million copies, helped massively by their hugely popular cover of Aerosmith's Walk This Way, with the rock band's Steve Tyler and Joe Perry appearing on the recording. Raising Hell's success in the metal scene, paved the way for future crossover groups, like The Beastie Boys with their imminent release Licensed to Ill. |

TOUGHER THAN LEATHER (1988)
After three hip-hop classics Tougher Than Leather marked the start of the bands creative decline. Plus, the hardcore hip-hop community had been busy defining rap in a much softer way, with groups like De La Soul and The Jungle Brothers both about to release their very own rap classics. Still, Tougher Than Leather, stands up as a great Run DMC album and can holds its own amongst most of the 1980s rap releases. |
