RADIO CUMBRIA

Radio Cumbria proves why it is a Sony nominated station - again

The number of people who tune in to BBC Radio Cumbria continues to grow, according to the latest RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) figures released today (Thursday 8 May 2003).

The official statistics show that BBC Radio Cumbria added 10,000 new listeners over the last three months - boosting its weekly audience to 132,000.

Today's figures come just hours before BBC Radio Cumbria hears the results for the country's most coveted radio honours - the Sony Awards.

The station has been nominated for the second year running and tonight it is shortlisted in the sport category for its Carlisle United Debate in the Saturday Sport programme.

BBC Radio Cumbria's managing editor Nigel Dyson says: "This is a recognition of the depth and range of programmes we produce which connects with all our audiences.

"Everyone at the station has responded to the communities they serve and produced and presented programmes that reflect Cumbrian life.

"Their surefooted assessment of what people want, the professionalism in the way they have delivered new and special services at speed, and their sheer hard work is reflected in these fabulous listening figures and is a credit to the whole team."

According to the independent audience research figures, listeners are also tuning in to BBC Radio Cumbria for an average 11.97 hours a week.

Last year BBC Radio Cumbria was named the Station of the Year at the Sony Radio Academy Awards in the 300,000 to one million listeners category.

The station won the Gold award for its coverage of the foot and mouth crisis across the county.
