BBC News completes presenter line-up

Gavin Esler is to join Newsnight, Andrew Neil will host a new political news programme, and Kirsty Lang is to become the main presenter on BBC FOUR News, BBC News announced today.

Richard Sambrook, Director of BBC News said: "The appointment of Gavin, Kirsty and Andrew adds great strength to our presenting team.

"Their combined experience as broadcasters and journalists and popularity with viewers will add to the appeal of their respective programmes."

Gavin Esler has been a news anchor on BBC News 24 since 1997.

He has received a Royal Television Society award and has reported for news and documentary programmes across Europe, Russia, China and North and South America.

He was appointed to Washington Correspondent in 1989, and then Chief North America Correspondent a year later.

Andrew Neil is to present a new 45 minute programme on BBC ONE looking at the week in Westminster, to follow Question Time on Thursday nights.

Neil is one of the most influential figures in the British media, having edited the Economist, the Sunday Times and helped to launch Sky Television.

He has presented a number of media and political programmes for the BBC and others.

Kirsty Lang steps up to become the main news anchor on BBC Four News following George Alagiah's move to the Six O'Clock News.

She joined the BBC from Channel Four News in March 2002 and had previously worked with the Sunday Times as its Paris correspondent.

She trained at the BBC and worked with the Today programme and Newsnight.

Roly Keating, the Controller of BBC FOUR, said: "Kirsty is a highly experienced foreign correspondent, with a wit, style and intelligence that are perfect for the unique remit of BBC FOUR News."

All three presenters will take up their new roles in the New Year.
