The third floor of the Nottingham Council House is
dominated by the Council Chamber, where the 55 councillors meet at
least 11 times a year.
You will notice a star on the floor in front of the Lord Mayor's seat
(the big one in the centre). This star marks the official centre of
Nottingham.
The seating in the chamber is arranged in a semi-circle, so that no-one
is more than 26 feet from the Lord Mayor.
Behind the councillors' seats there are two galleries - press on the
left and seats for 250,000 Nottinghamians on the right - council meetings
are open to us all.
The Council House is a listed building - you are not allowed to drill
a hole without planning permission - therefore the microphones installed
on the desks have been rigged through the old ink wells.
The installation of microphones is not a sign that there are bad acoustics
in the room - they are near perfect - aided by the walls being covered
in layers of seaweed for soundproofing.
High above the Lord Mayor's dias is a panel bearing two Latin inscriptions.
They proclaim: 'Laws are made for the welfare of the citizens and
the city' and 'It is the highest justice to give each man his due'.
