Brian's Belfast Sketchbook

When I worked in Belfast during the 60's and 70's I used to wander the City with a sketchbook during my lunch breaks.

I think the sketch Millfield 1971 was a derelict building at the corner of Brown Street.

There used to be a shop facing West Street called Jimmy Higgins, I think it was a general store but it was their in about 1965 we used to get things on tick until payday as most people did in those days.

You are 100% right on Carrols bar Geordy (see below ), it was right next door to my first place of work in 1969 - McKelvey and Sinclairs timber.

Hello, Does anyone out there remember Clonard Confections on 142 Falls Road owned by Mrs Ellen O'Hara? If so please let me know. circa 1935. Thank you.

I remember at the bottom of Convention Street there was Annies were my Aunt Mac used to work. We'd head up there to get sweeties and hopefully she'd drop an extra one in the bag, if Annie or Tommie wasn't watching. Never did know if Annie & Tommy were a couple ?? Around the corner was Todds at the bottom of Cable Street. Then up a few doors from where we used to make sticks for sale was Alec and Minnie Rutherfords, if I remember right, where we would get my Da's Gallaghers Blues and a loaf & cheese on the book until payday from Harlands. I am sounding ancient now but the kids of today are missing out on so much history and traditions. It was a time I would never change.

Hello from Syracuse New York. There was a pub in the middle of Millfield, almost facing West St, called Pat Carrols. It had an off licence type front. The only shopfronts were in that area almost facing West St on the left hand side if you were going towards Mill St which was then the lower part of Divis. I went to school at St Anthonys Millfield and my Mother was from Francis St, Millfield. Slan.
