Brighton
bomber walks out of prison
From NEWS LETTER June 23rd, 1999
"The release of Patrick Magee ... will bring home to people the fact that the prisoner releases are continuing even though other aspects of the Agreement, such as disarmament by paramilitary organisations, has not actually moved forward." In a week when agreement had been made and an actual start to
disarming the KLA in Kosovo begun, "people become conscious of the contrast".
DUP security spokesman Ian Paisley Junior said the release of Magee was
"a slap in the face for the democratic process". The Assembly member added:
"Tony Blair threatens to close down democratic accountability on June 30 yet he says nothing about the release of multiple killers." He said the
releases must cease until the issue of decommissioning was resolved. "The Government is acting in the most reckless fashion with the future of Northern Ireland." But Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness called on the Prime Minister
to ignore calls for a halt to the scheme. He accused Tory Shadow Northern
Ireland Secretary Andrew MacKay of using the releases to "whip up opposition"
to the Agreement. |
