MacNeice contracted pneumonia while recording sound effects
in a damp cave for a BBC assignment. He died on 4 September
1963, in London. He was just 55 years old. MacNeice was
buried in the beautiful surroundings of the Co Down countryside,
in the Church of Ireland graveyard, Carrowdore. His beloved
mother is buried beside him.
MacNeice always felt himself a stranger in Ireland and in
exile in England. He never settled in either place. From
Carrowdore graveyard, you can see Belfast Lough in one direction
and the coast of Scotland in the other. A fitting resting
place for the poet who was always in between cultures and
countries.
