Supermarket Bleep by Niall McAvera

It was Benjamin’s first day. Beep. It was his first job. Beep. Benjamin was 17. Beep. Benjamin needed money. Beep. He walked through the automatic doors, the summer sun beating on his back. He suddenly froze on the presser mat. His mind had just gone blank; he had just forgotten all the instruction he was given on what to do on his first day, lost forever in the dark space that was his mind.

“Ben!” shouted a voice from the flowers stand. He scanned what was in front of him. It was Stuart. Stuart was a friend from school who had helped Benjamin get the job. Stuart was a hard man to describe.  Stuart was fat but very strong, he had done karate for a year, mainly because there was a girl there he fancied, he had straw like hair, it was the colour of it too. Stuart was incredibility slow minded and had little common sense but at the same time he was incredibility intelligent.

“Ben, over here!” he called out.  Benjamin came back to life and walked over to the flowers. He reached Stuart and greeted him with a nod and a smirk. Benjamin looked down at Stuart’s nametag; it said “Joanne.” Benjamin began to open his mouth, about to make a joke, inhaling as he did so.
"Yes, I know, hilarious, " said Stuart as his face scrunched up. The serious look on Stuart's face made Benjamin giggle slightly. There was then a moment of silence between the two. Stuart nudged his head sideward’s towards the door labeled 'Staff' next to the costumer services desk, which was unoccupied for some reason. Without a word the walked through the door and into the ‘backstage.’ Stuart led Benjamin to the staff room where a few of the other staff were standing in a bunch, focusing on the door and then Benjamin, they smiled at him. Stuart stood forward and turned to Benjamin.
“Ok, so this the gang. This is Emily, Rob, Haydn, Darrel and Rebecca.” Stuart said, pointing each one of them as he went along.

The group was around the same age as Benjamin, 17 and 16. Rob was tall, skinny, pale and a tad crazy. He was usually very normal but secretly he had a lot of pent up aggression. He would be the type of guy you’d see on the news on a killing spree because he finally snapped. If someone were to even pretend punch Rob he would freak out would try to kill them, usually using his legs and feet as his primary weapon, he would throw his leg so high he could kick someone in the upper arm. This tactic backfired once when he freaked out and tried to kick Haydn but Haydn grabbed his leg in mid-air and Rob was left defenseless and weak. Haydn was the cool/wild one of the gang. He was the guy who would go out drinking and mess around and he had the scars to prove them, literally Haydn was hairy, to say the least. His facial hair grew far quicker than the others. His hair was thick and long, even his arms were hairy, someone once pointed out that even the back of his hands were hairy. Emily was the mature one of the group. She had curly black hair, which ran to just above her shoulders, she usually wore a red bow with white polka dot in her hair too. It would be difficult to describe the colour of Emily’s hair but Benjamin would compare it to the colour of tarmac.  She was the quiet type, with a light voice. She was very polite and Benjamin allows thought that, although he himself wasn’t interested, she would be a great girlfriend but she didn’t. This is where Darrel would come in. Darrel was a stereotype of a closeted homosexual but he wasn’t, he just lacked all masculinity. Darrel was a life long friend of Emily but Darrel allows loved her but couldn’t get the courage to tell her. Benjamin always thought that it was such a cliché.  Darrel had long hair, around the same length as Emily’s, which was (badly) dyed. His natural hair was a dark chestnut shade of brown and he dyed his hair bleach blonde but his roots were still their natural colour, making it look very unattractive. Darrel was quite an annoying person to know, he was very paranoid and constantly reading to much into things, this was one of the reasons he didn’t have a girlfriend, along with the fact thought he was gay, but no matter what Benjamin and him were friends. And finally there was Rebecca. Rebecca was small, musical type of girl, playing the guitar was her interest. She had long, her hair colour was hard to describe because it was a mixture of brown and ginger. She had hazel shaded eyes. Benjamin later began to feel very attracted to Rebecca, having quite a large crush on her.

The group began to chat to Benjamin, asking him about what he did for a hobby and such. Benjamin started to hear the sound of clopping, like a horse on a cobblestone road, it got louder and louder.
“So, you must be the Ben.” Said a feminine voice from behind Benjamin. Benjamin slowly turned around know that he was going to be met by his boss for the next 3 months, miss Colt. She stared deep into his eyes, freaking his entire soul out. So Benjamin broken into a nervous smile, unfortunately the smile was not returned. She had a box in her hand, holding it like she felt above holding objects. She thrust it into Benjamin‘s chest.
“Here’s your uniform, ” she told him, “don’t lose it,” she continued to say in a sour tone. She then turned swiftly and left the room in a rush. Benjamin turn back around to the others, now with an awkward smile planted on his face. He looked down at the box and opened it. Within the box there was one pair of office trousers, one navy blue polo shirt and one nametag with the word ‘Ben placed neatly on the plastic, he guessed his full name was to big for the nametag. Benjamin looked back up at everyone, realizing that they were all wearing matching clothes, he thought himself an idiot for not noticing before. Ethan began to open his mouth to ask a question.
“You can get changed in the clothes department.” They all said, as one. Benjamin found this incredibly unnerving. As he left the ‘backstage’ and into the main store he thought to himself. ‘What was creepier, the fact that they will have planned that or the fact I’m going to be spending the next 3 weeks working with these people...at least the pay is good...isn’t it.’
