Is 90-year-old Ian the fastest grandad in the world?

A 90-year-old man from the UK is believed to have run the fastest 10k ever recorded by someone in his age group.

Ian Winship finished Scotland's Cumbernauld 10k in one hour, four minutes and 37 seconds.

The 10 kilometre race is just over six miles long.

Ian, who lives in Cumbernauld in North Lanarkshire, became emotional when he heard his result.

He said: "It's just unbelievable. Cumbernauld might be famous now because of me."

Ian felt a little "wobbly" after crossing the finish line. Paramedics offered him a wheelchair, but he turned it down.

So, how does he stay fit? Ian says he goes on long walks and completes around 20,000 steps each day.

He adds that it's important to get out and about: "If I sit in the house I'll vegetate. I must meet people."

Ian ran alongside his daughter, Fiona, and his grandson, Kyle.

Kyle, who came third in the race, said his grandfather inspired him to start running, saying Ian has always told the family that running "keeps me fit and it keeps me out of trouble."

Scottish Athletics has said it considers Ian's time a 'world best' for male runners aged 90 to 94. It is not officially called a world record because community road races are not measured in the same precise way as professional events.

However, there have been no reports of another 90-year-old completing a 10k in a faster time.

Now, Ian already has his next big challenge in mind - to "live to 100".
