Would you try a cookie that's made with plastic?

Have you ever baked cookies before... Maybe you used flour, eggs, sugar? Maybe added some chocolate?

But, you probably didn't add plastic, right? That would just be weird!

Well, cookies made from plastic and other waste just might be the new food eaten by astronauts in space!

A Nasa-funded project aimed at feeding astronauts on future space missions has found a way to use plastics to make cookies.

But have people tried them yet? And do they taste out of this world?

The technology transforms plastics and agricultural waste into edible proteins, fats and flavourings.

This is then passed through a 3D printer to create a disc-shaped edible cookie.

Well, the plastic cookies haven't been approved for humans just yet.

But, the team of scientists say they smell great!

Currently the cookies are pretty expensive! They cost $60 a kilogram to produce (that's about £44).

Researchers are hoping they can bring those costs down in the future.

The team working on them also suggested they might be good for use in submarines too.

And, eventually even for ordinary use, but they did say the idea of eating food made from plastic may take a little getting used to!

The method to transform waste plastic into food was funded as part of Nasa's Deep Space Food Challenge.

It invites scientists to develop new food technologies to solve the problems of feeding astronauts on long voyages.

When an astronaut goes to Mars, they have to survive in extreme conditions and the round-trip would take three years, so they really need food that can last a long time!
