Annoying noises on holiday: Would cowbells bother you?

What is the most annoying noise you have heard on your summer holiday?

Maybe it was loud music from hotel entertainment that goes on well after your bedtime.

Could it be little brothers or sisters, squealing, shouting and splashing by a pool.

Or perhaps it was birds singing very early in the morning, just when you wanted a lie-in.

Well, in one mountain village in Italy, some holidaymakers have been upset by a very different sound: Cowbells.

In the village of Serina in northern Italy, farmers keep cows in fields on the mountains. Some of the cows wear bells, which help the farmers know where the animals are.

But some visitors said the bells are too noisy, especially when the cows moved near to their holiday flats. Local reports said some people even went home early because they found it hard to rest.

The mayor of Serina, Michele Villarboito, did not agree that the cows should lose their bells. He said the cows, fields and farms are part of life in the mountains. In other words, arguing that if you visit the countryside, you might hear countryside sounds.

It is not the only place where this has happened. In Spain, one town once warned visitors that they might hear church bells, roosters, tractors and cowbells. In France, one village recently stopped church bells ringing at night after people complained they could not sleep.
