The US and Iran say they have reached a deal for peace, which will be signed in Switzerland on Friday.

The war began with US and Israeli air strikes across Iran on 28 February.

Iran responded by attacking Israel, and countries in the region which are friendly to the US, and closed the Strait of Hormuz, a very important shipping route for oil and gas.

Once the peace deal is signed, it will begin a period of 60 days during which there will be no fighting, and where the US and Iran will have to agree on how to destroy and remove Iran's nuclear material.

Experts say that agreeing the details of that will be really difficult.

BBC Chief North America Correspondent Gary O'Donoghue added that "In truth, the deal – while crucial – is just a beginning."

The agreement was announced on Sunday evening, with Pakistan, who have been helping with the talks, saying Iran and the US will end "military operations on all fronts".

Donald Trump confirmed it on social media, saying: "The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete."

It was also announced on Iran state TV news channel.

Leaders from the UK, France, Germany and Italy have welcomed the news.

Sir Keir Starmer said the US-Iran peace deal is a "hugely important step forward in ending the war".

He stressed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain "fully and permanently open".

About 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz, so the disruption caused by the war has had big consequences around the world.

Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan said: "Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED.

"Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon."

The G7 group of countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, are due to meet later today, along with leaders from the European Union, where the deal will be discussed in detail.
