All eyes were on Mexico, as the 2026 co-hosts kicked off the celebrations for the biggest World Cup in history.
And there certainly seemed to be plenty of excitement all round - even the local pets were joining in the fun!

The World Cup started with a spectacular and colourful show, which took place Estadio Azteca, the iconic stadium in Mexico City.
It was a historic day for Mexico, as they became first country to host the Fifa World Cup three times.

The opening ceremony blended a mix of Mexico's heritage and culture with music, dancing and football celebrations.
The stands were packed with people showing their support, with many wearing Mexico's team colours.

Fans in the stadium were treated to a number of musical performances too.
Global superstar Shakira performed her song 'Dai dai' - an Italian phrase meaning "come on, come on" - along with Nigerian singer Burna Boy.

Kpop Demon Hunters fans were also in luck - as EJAE took to the stage with opera legend Andrea Bocelli.
The pair sung the official anthem of the 2026 World Cup, called 'DNA'.

Then it was time for the football to finally begin!
The opening match saw co-hosts Mexico take on South Africa in front of a packed stadium with more than 85,000 fans.

And it was Mexico who made the stronger start, taking the lead inside ten minutes with a goal from striker Julian Quinones.
However, that wasn't the only drama in the game.

Three players were shown a red card - the first time in twenty years that has happened in a World Cup match.
South Africa's Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off, and then Mexico's Cesar Montes was dismissed in stoppage time.

That didn't stop fans across the country celebrating at full time - as their team picked up all three points, thanks to a 2-0 result.
Striker Raul Jimenez sealed victory for the co-hosts in the second half, with his first goal at a World Cup.

The second match of the day saw the other two teams in Group A - South Korea and Czechia - face each other.
Despite Czechia taking the lead, South Korea came from behind to win the game 2-1.
