    Jersey Zoo is closing to visitors from Tuesday, 24 March, after it was announced all islanders must socially distance themselves., external

    A spokesman said it had been "a very difficult decision" but the welfare of visitors, staff and the animals remained its priority.

    "During this unsettling time, our dedicated team of keepers, vets and essential support staff will ensure that all our animals continue to receive the very best care and we will endeavour to keep our loyal members, visitors and supporters updated on news from the zoo."

    The zoo will remain closed "until further notice", they added.

  2. Jersey public sports centres to closepublished at 14:39 GMT 23 March 2020

    The Government of Jersey is closing its sports centres from 15:00 in a move designed to help reduce the spread of coronavirus.

    All sports facilities will be closed at:

    • Fort Regent
    • Les Quennevais Sports Centre
    • Springfield Sports Centre
    • Oakfield Sports Centre
    • Langford Sports Centre
    • Haute Vallee Swimming Pool

    A spokeswoman said the Active App would continue to provide health advice and home workouts to Active Members.

    Government-owned outside spaces and playing fields will remain open, but islanders should follow advice on social distance while using them.

    The Government of Jersey is co-ordinating a volunteer group of islanders who want to help others during the coronavirus outbreak.

    Anyone who is willing to give up their time can register their skills, qualifications and availability on volunteer.je., external

    Individuals will then be matched to a "community need".

    The group will be headed up by Malcom Ferey, chief executive of the Citizen's Advice Bureau, and will form part of the Community Steering Group, chaired by the Social Security Minister, Deputy Judy Martin.

    Deputy Martin said: "We are lucky to have so many people willing to give up their time to help others. By co-ordinating efforts, we can ensure that the right help reaches the right people, when they need it.

    "Meanwhile, I encourage islanders to continue supporting their friends, family and neighbours whilst following the guidance on the Government website."

  5. Jersey Electricity defers price risepublished at 10:21 GMT 23 March 2020

    The 2.5% rise in tariff prices had been due to take effect on 1 April.

    "At this unprecedented time of uncertainty and with our customers being forced to spend more time in their homes, and particularly those in vulnerable circumstances, the board has taken the decision to defer the 2.5% rise to 1 October 2020," said Jersey Electricity CEO Chris Ambler.

    The move is expected to lose the company £1m in revenue.

    Mr Ambler said the firm understood the "the fears and challenges our community is facing".

    He said: "With many Islanders ultimately facing job losses and businesses likely forced to close, even if temporarily, it is important that the utilities in our small community work together to help customers through this crisis."

    Mr Ambler said: "Our priorities continue to be the health and safety of the general public, our customers and our employees as well as maintaining services."

    He said measures were being taken to safeguard staff and ensure the electricity supply to the island.

    The only McDonald's in Jersey, located in St Helier, has confirmed it will be closing from 19:00 on Monday, until "further notice".

    It follows the announcement that all of the chain's UK restaurants will close from Monday evening.

  7. Jersey boat owners reminded not to land elsewherepublished at 09:28 GMT 23 March 2020

    The island's health authorities have issued a reminder to all boat owners in Jersey about following the guidelines on the infection.

    They are still able to go out sailing, but can't land anywhere else than Jersey and only take people they live with on board to avoid spreading the infection.

    On Friday Herm closed its harbours to all vessels from outside the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

  9. Jersey buses go cashlesspublished at 08:45 GMT 23 March 2020

    Cash can no longer be used to pay for buses in Jersey.

    Liberty Bus is asking passengers to use their AvanchiCard or pay by card on the bus or at Liberation Station.

    The advice from the health department about accepting payment is:

    "You are recommended to take contactless card/smartphone payments where possible and deal with cash as little as possible."

    The schools were closed by the island's government as part of efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus.

    They will remain closed until at least the end of the Easter holidays when the situation will be reassessed.

    There are about 15,000 school children in Jersey.

    All pubs and clubs were shut from 20:00 on Sunday.

    It is the latest measure introduced by the States of Jersey in a bid to limit the spread of coronavirus in the island.
