• The Northampton Chronicle & Echo, external says a concerned dad who claims pedestrians have taken to using head torches is calling on Northamptonshire County Council to “investigate the dim, inadequate street lighting” in Northampton.

Former Wellingborough snooker player Rory McLeod is ranked 52nd in the world and spent 10 years on a secondary tour on which another black player, John Clouden, also competed during 1994 and 1995 - but there have not been any others since.

Last season was the most successful of McLeod's career, as he won his first title carrying ranking points with a surprise victory at the Ruhr Open in Germany.

However, he feels a lack of funding means black people will find it difficult to follow in his footsteps.

"You need black people in the snooker clubs for starters," said McLeod who first played snooker seriously at the Embassy Club, Wellingborough, in his early teens.

However, McLeod explains that snooker is not his number one priority...

Plans to change the Wellingborough Parliamentary constituency boundary "lack cohesion, threaten accessibility, and break local ties", according to a report for the borough council due to be discussed, tonight.

The Wellingborough seat is currently held by Conservative Peter Bone, who is also against the proposals.

Under the proposals Wellingborough would lose part of its area to Kettering, Daventry, and Northampton South but Irthlingborough would join Wellingborough from the Corby seat.

The report says the move would lead to "further losing the identity" of the borough.

Borough councillors will hold a special meeting tonight to decide what official response to send to the Boundary Commission, which came up with the draft proposals.

The commission say that the changes are needed to make each Parliamentary seat the same size - give or take 5% - but that it wants people "to take a look and tell us what they like and don't like about our proposals".

We’ve been discussing possible legal action over the design and building of the Corby Cube and the £13m overspend, but what’s happened to the top floor of the Cube?

The fourth floor was originally earmarked for a rooftop restaurant. It was then suggested it could be turned into an art gallery. The current plans are to turn it into office space.

The rooftop garden has gone, the trees removed, leaving a wide expanse of decking and magnificent views across Corby.

A year ago, the council was confident of letting the fourth floor, speaking of interest from businesses. The council has earmarked £83,000 to fit out the space to make it suitable. That work is due to start in the New Year. The council is still hopeful of letting the space soon.

It may be a while before we know the result of tonight’s decision on whether Corby Borough Council should take legal action over the Cube.

The £48m civic centre opened in November 2010. It cost £13m more than anticipated.

This evening, the cross-party group of councillors is meeting in private with council officials and lawyers to decide whether to try to claw back some of the overspend by going to court. 

The result of that meeting is likely to be kept secret until their recommendations are discussed with other councillors and put before a committee meeting in the New Year.

Northamptonshire batsman Ben Duckett made five and nought in England's defeat in the second test against India - dismissed twice by off-spinner Ravinchandran Ashwin - and has failed to pass 15 in six of his seven Test innings since making his debut in Bangladesh.

Former England batsman Mark Butcher told BBC 5 live Sport: "The problem he is having is clear for all to see."

Butcher continued: "You just want to crawl in a hole when that happens to you."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan agreed: "Duckett looks shot facing Ashwin - he looked like a rabbit in the headlights. He needs a little breather to work out that technique against the spinners."

Some media outlets, including the Evening Standard, external, the Guardian, external and cricket website Cricinfo, external, are reporting that Duckett is set to be dropped for the third test which starts on Saturday.

Six years after the Corby Cube first opened, the borough council is deciding tonight whether to take legal action against some of the companies involved in the design and build of the civic building.

The Cube - which houses the council offices, library, register office and theatre - cost £48m and was £13m over budget.

A cross-party group of councillors is meeting in private with council officials and lawyers to decide whether to try to claw back some of the overspend by going to court.

It's unclear which businesses - if any - the council might take action against, or, indeed, if there are any grounds for action.

Four men from London who pretended to be police officers as they conned over £100,000 out of elderly and vulnerable victims in a nationwide fraud have been jailed.

The men operated in 13 different areas including Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, and the Thames Valley area.

The Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit, which investigated, said the group would phone unsuspecting victims, convincing them they needed their money to investigate fraudulent transactions in their account.

Victims were then informed they needed to go to the bank and withdraw a large amount of money, usually between £5,000 and £20,000. The bogus officer would then send someone around, who would also pretend to be with the police, to collect the money.

The four men, from London, all admitted conspiracy to commit fraud at Leeds Crown Court. 

Shah Ahmed, 22, of Toynbee Street, was jailed for four years, seven months; Rahim Ali, 22, of Vernon Road, was jailed for three years, six months; Malik Amer, 24, of Monthorpe Road, received a three years and seven months' sentence and Ruhel Miah, 19, of Chilton Street, was jailed for four years and 11 months.

The Environment Agency says there are currently no flood warnings for Northamptonshire but there are two flood alerts, external - one for the River Tove, between Towcester and Paulersbury, and another for the Upper River Great Ouse in the south of the county.

The agency says river levels are rising and it's continuing to monitor the situation.

Northampton Saints is asking supporters to bring a little Christmas cheer this week.

The club wants fans coming to the game against Newcastle on Friday to bring along a new toy, which will then be donated to a child who might otherwise not get a present.

It suggests people should not spend more than £10.

Residents of Ecton Brook have been wondering why part of Greendale Square is cordoned off, which was reported in the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, external.

Northamptonshire Police says searches in the area are part of "an ongoing drive to tackle drug-related violence".

A police spokesman said a property was searched on Greendale Square on Friday and "officers have remained in the area during the weekend, where searches have continued to take place as part of the investigation".

Police have urged anyone with concerns or information to get in touch, external.
