Sheffield United's £20m striker Oli McBurnie has appeared in court to face a drink-driving charge.

The Scotland international striker was stopped by West Yorkshire Police in Garforth near Leeds in the early hours of 18 October.

He is accused of being one-and-a-half times over the legal limit.

The 23-year-old pleaded not guilty to one charge of drink-driving at Leeds Magistrates' Court earlier and is due to go on trial on 16 March.

Dr Kevin Moore was brought in to develop the bridge as a major tourist attraction.

Disturbances in Harehills in Leeds last night, which saw six police officers injured and 15 people arrested, have been described as "utter chaos" by local residents.

Police in riot gear and groups of youths clashed after disorder broke out in the area at about 20:00.

Local resident Dave Murphy said: "There was a bit of fireworks as normal and then all of a sudden, you could tell just by looking that it was escalating.

"Then, the next minute it went boom. Riots started going up and down, fireworks, fires.

"I saw about 80 police officers in riot gear and there were about 60 people shooting rockets and whatever else at police."

Jonathan Lawrence (pictured above) said: "It was utter chaos. At about 11:15 the riot police showed up. I dared to look out the window and there was a line of riot police at the top of the street.

"I'm a big supporter of Harehills, we have a lot of good stuff and a lot of good people living here, but I've never been so terrified as I was last night. I have to admit I'm considering moving as I do not want to be in that position again."

Bradford City's League Two fixture away at Colchester United, which was due to take place on 16 November, has been postponed.

The game has been called off because three Colchester players were called up for international duty, which automatically gives the club the right to apply for a postponement.

A new date for the match hasn't been announced yet.

A private ambulance company which was described as "inept and disorganised" by its own staff has been stripped of an NHS contract.

Thames Ambulance Service Limited (TASL) will stop providing patient transport services in Hull next year.

The non-emergency service will be instead be operated by NHS-run Yorkshire Ambulance Service from March 2020.

TASL described losing the contract as a "great disappointment".

The company had faced a number of complaints, and MPs had called for its contracts to be terminated during a parliamentary debate.

At least 650,000 illegal cigarettes and packets of tobacco have been seized in East Yorkshire in the past six months, according to police.

Tobacco dogs and local policing teams have been working with Trading Standards officers to search houses, businesses, and vehicles, said Humberside Police.

A "hooligan element" has been blamed by West Yorkshire Police for disturbances in Leeds last night which saw a number of police officers injured.

Six officers were hurt and 15 people have been arrested after disorder broke out in Harehills at about 20:00.

Youths throwing fireworks and setting fire to bins were tackled by police in riot gear.

Ch Supt Steve Cotter said there was no suggestion the disorder was the result of "any tension in the community or animosity towards the police".

"This appears to have been about a hooligan element of local youths seeing an opportunity on Bonfire Night to engage in firework-related disorder on a large-scale.

"Police officers were deliberately targeted and injured during these incidents and that is not something we can ever accept," Det Supt Cotter added.

Rail passengers travelling between Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and London are facing long delays and cancellations after an incident on the line between Grantham and Newark North Gate.

East Coast Main Line services affected include those from Bradford, Leeds, York, Doncaster and Grantham.

The line between Peterborough and Doncaster has reopened recently, but delays are expected until about 16:00, according to National Rail Enquiries, external.

Buses are running between Newark and Lincoln and customers affected by the disruption are being told they can use their tickets on services tomorrow.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after an elderly woman had her hand bag stolen in Sheffield.

The 80-year-old was walking along an alleyway close to Little Norton Lane in the Meadowhead area of the city last Wednesday at about 17:15.

The woman was approached and asked for money to get a taxi, and then for coins for a bus fare.

She refused, and the suspect is then reported to have grabbed her handbag, causing her to fall to the floor.

South Yorkshire Police said a 17-year-old boy arrested in connection with the incident is being held in police custody.

A man accused of murdering a mother of two in Halifax will stand trial in April.

Levi Ogden, 26, was discovered seriously injured in Silver Street on Sunday and died later in hospital.

Lloyd Birkby, 26, of Langdale Street, Halifax, is charged with murder and two counts of common assault.

Appearing via video link at Bradford Crown Court he entered no plea. He is due to reappear on 6 January and the judge set a trial date of 27 April.

Six police officers were hurt and 15 people arrested during disorder in part of Leeds last night.

Police were targeted with "fireworks and other missiles" during the trouble which happened in Harehills yesterday evening, according to the West Yorkshire force.

Officers were initially called at about 18:00 to reports of youths gathering in the Banstead Park area and lighting a fire.

By 19:30, a wheelie bin had been set alight in Harehills Road leading to officers being deployed who then came under attack from fireworks. Passing motorists were also targeted, say police.

By about 12:30 this morning, the situation was "calmed and relative normality returned to the area", according to the force.

Four police officers were hurt during the trouble, with two needing hospital treatment, but none were seriously injured, police say.

A total of 15 males, aged between 11 and 23, all from Harehills area, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and remain in custody.

Yorkshire Dales planners have been told that 60 new homes were given planning permission in the national park last year, but only 25 were completed.

A meeting of the audit committee, external was told there were now outstanding permissions for 600 homes, but a shortage of new affordable housing remained.

Mr Barton (pictured), 37, is alleged to have pushed the German manager at Barnsley's Oakwell Stadium on 13 April after Fleetwood lost their League One match 4-2, leaving Mr Stendel with a damaged tooth.

The former England international pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he appeared at Sheffield Crown Court this morning.

A man who was seriously injured in a collision with a lorry on the M621 in Leeds earlier this week has died in hospital, say police.

John Rangeley, 47, from Beeston, Leeds, was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry near junction 3 just after 05:00 on Monday.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he had emergency treatment but died yesterday, according to West Yorkshire Police.

Officers say they want anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has relevant dash-cam footage, to get in touch.

A total of 12 large cannabis plants have been seized in a drugs raid at a property in South Yorkshire.

The plants were discovered in the attic room of a house on Milton Road in Mexborough, according to South Yorkshire Police.

A 30-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were interviewed and released under investigation, say the force.

Det Insp Steve Smith, said: “We are continuing to work hard to show the local community organised crime will not be tolerated.”

Police officers will carry out "high visibility" patrols in part of Leeds today after Bonfire Night disorder last night.

The disorder, involving groups of youths throwing fireworks and setting bins alight, broke out at about 20:00, and saw fireworks and missiles hurled at police.

Several people were arrested and investigations are continuing to identify those involved, say police.

Ch Supt Damien Miller said: "In conjunction with our partner agencies, we have prepared for all possible eventualities over the bonfire period.

"We made it clear from the outset that any instances of disorder or antisocial behaviour would not be tolerated and we were able to quickly respond.

“Those individuals that engage in such behaviour are within the minority and do not represent the wider community," he added.

A cycling-on-prescription scheme which was run as a trial in Yorkshire has been so successful it could be rolled out across the UK, organisers say.

The scheme allows health professionals to offer those with long-term conditions 12 weeks of cycle training.

More than 1,000 people have been referred to the scheme since it launched four years ago, according to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Cycle UK said the scheme showed cycling was good for overall well-being.

The initiative is funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which covers Barnsley, Bradford, Calderdale, Craven, Harrogate, Kirklees, Leeds, Selby, Wakefield and York.

Figures from 2018-19 showed people using the scheme reported a marked increase in feeling more confident and relaxed.
