    These are images of colourful skies above Birmingham on Thursday evening, just as snow came to the city, where it continued to fall overnight and on Friday morning.

    There's been speculation on social media it could have been the Northern Lights, with others suggesting it was a reflection from UV set-ups at Birmingham City FC's stadium.

    We will endeavour to get an answer on the science behind the phenomenon. Stand by...

  2. Bus services resume in Coventrypublished at 07:35 GMT 9 January

    Rest of network suspended - for now

    We've just had an update from National Express West Midlands which says services have resumed in Coventry, however the rest of the network will remain suspended until at least 08:30 GMT.

    "Key routes were blocked with debris, and abandoned vehicles and buses were displaced across the region," the company said.

    "Customers should check our website and social media channels for regular updates and we thank them for bearing with us.”

    Dozens of schools in Worcestershire have closed their doors today following the snow. To see the latest situation, go here, external.

  4. Head-on crashpublished at 07:19 GMT 9 January

    Firefighters from Oswestry were called in heavy snow to this head-on car crash on the A5 near West Felton, Shropshire, on Thursday night.

    Only minor injuries were reported.

  5. Birmingham Airport latestpublished at 07:16 GMT 9 January

    All flights continue to be suspended at Birmingham Airport.

    Passengers due to travel have been asked to contact their airline for flight status.

    Snow clearance was under way, the airport reported about an hour ago.

  6. Bus services suspendedpublished at 07:09 GMT 9 January

    No bus services are running until at least 08:00 GMT, National Express West Midlands has said.

    Difficult conditions and low temperatures were making it impossible to run its services, the operator stated.

  7. Demand on fire servicepublished at 07:06 GMT 9 January

    Overnight, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Fire said its control room was receiving high call volumes, and dealing with a variety of incidents across the county.

    Those incidents included issues with power cables.

  8. Cemeteries shut, cremations rearrangedpublished at 06:55 GMT 9 January

    City of Wolverhampton Council has confirmed that cemeteries in the city will be shut amid the adverse weather, with cremation dates rearranged.

    Other disrupted services in the city include waste collections, which have been called off on Friday.

    Residents, however, are advised to put out their bins as they will be collected as soon as safe to do so.

    Recycling centres at Anchor Lane and Shaw Road will be closed.

    The council said only essential adult social care services would be delivered on Friday.

    Shropshire Council says its 25 gritters were out across the county last night and will be out again treating primary routes on Friday morning. You can see where they go here, external.

    Random fact: Twenty of the gritters were named after a public vote in 2020. Names include Spreddie Flintoff and David Plowie.

    Deep snow and fallen trees are affecting many roads across the West Midlands.

    Some of the major routes affected include:

    • The A38 - closed in both directions due to emergency repairs from A448 Bromsgrove Highway to Slideslow Drive
    • The A38 eastbound is only just passable due to snow from M5 junction four to Rubery in Worcestershire
    • Also in Worcestershire, the A456 Hagley Road is closed in both directions from Hall Lane to Manor Way
    • The A456 Quinton Expressway in Birmingham is closed in both directions due to snow, from M5 junction three to Quinton

    As Storm Goretti passes through the West Midlands, an amber weather warning remains in place until 09:00 GMT and a yellow warning for snow is in place until 12:00.

    Early headlines are as follows...

    Power cuts have affected thousands of homes right across the West Midlands, especially in Shropshire, but power has been restored to many properties.

    Birmingham Airport said teams were completing final snow clearance and safety checks, but runway operations were suspended at this time.

    And as we've just been telling you, there is major disruption to the rail network, with West Midlands Railway warning customers not to travel until at least this afternoon.

    London Northwestern Railway has suspended services between Birmingham and Liverpool Lime Street.

    West Midlands Railway is running a reduced timetable and urged people to check before travelling.

    The rail company also said emergency speed restrictions could be introduced and services might also be delayed due to icy conditions.

    The operator said snow and ice build up on the tracks as well as the risk of ice coating the overhead power lines could prevent trains from drawing the power they needed - bringing services to a stop in some cases.

    Transport for Wales (TfW) has also suspended some services and is running a reduced timetable on others.

    Services between Cardiff and Crewe and on services from Shrewsbury to Holyhead, Aberystwyth, Crewe and Birmingham are all be affected.
