  9. Streeting 'on the case' with hospital repairspublished at 11:49 GMT 22 January

Following claims conditions at Stepping Hill Hospital are forcing staff to care for patients in "buildings that are literally crumbling around them", Mike Sweeney asked Streeting what the government planned to do about the current state of disrepair.

Streeting told BBC Radio Manchester, “I’m on the case. I met the Stockport MP just last week to talk about this".

“We’ve put £2.5m in already for some of the essential safety works and we've given the local trust £75m over the next four years as well.

“But I know that this is something that local MPs and councillors are banging the drum for, so people should start seeing improvements at Stepping Hill, but there is lots more to do.”

This comes after a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson previously said the government inherited a "broken NHS", with the hospital estate left to crumble.

"We are providing Stepping Hill Hospital with over £2.5m this year for targeted essential safety works, including fire safety improvements.

"In addition, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has been allocated over £75m over the next four years which can be used to improve conditions at Stepping Hill."

Mike has short grey hair and is wearing a black jumper. He is wearing headphones and talking into a purple microphone.
