At least seven people have died in Thailand after a teenage boy shot his grandparents and then went on a shooting spree at a local secondary school.

Police have said five teachers were killed before the 14-year-old gunman turned the weapon on himself.

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the attack was "well prepared".

A 31-year-old teacher who asked not to be named described hearing gunshots and screaming pupils as the attack unfolded: "One of the teachers killed...was my friend."

Students who escaped the shooting have spoken of their shock, with one girl describing seeing a teacher shot in front of her and climbing over a fence to escape.

The shooting has raised questions about gun control in the country, writes our South East Asia correspondent, and the PM has pledged to introduce a new firearms control law.

Thai PM Anutin Charnvirakul, speaking at a news conference, said the attack was "well prepared" with "clear steps and clear goals".

A 31-year-old teacher who asked not to be named heard gunshots and "saw pupils run out, screaming".

Rescue worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith described how he saw "students who had been shot" when he arrived at the school, adding the suspected gunman still had a pulse when rescuers "rushed up" after he turned the gun on himself.

The boyfriend of a killed teacher tried to hold back tears as he told reporters: "This shouldn’t have happened."

It's evening in Thailand, where an investigation continues into the motive behind the shooting.

At a residence where police say the shooter killed his grandparents, officers can be seen carrying away computer equipment and boxes.

Ten people have been discharged while 13 others remain in hospital following the shooting, Thai officials have said.

The latest casualty figures show that five teachers, the suspected shooter and his grandparents have died.

Thailand's prime minister is pledging to introduce a new firearms control law in the wake of today's shooting.

Under the proposed new legislation, there will be restrictions on members of the public carrying such weapons.

"The new law will only allow government officials on duty to carry guns," Anutin Charnvirakul tells reporters, in remarks translated by the Reuters news agency.

He did not provide any specifics for the proposed legislation, including whether it would tighten gun ownership requirements.

As we reported earlier, Thailand has one of the highest civilian gun ownership rates in South East Asia.

The Debsirin School at the centre of the shooting has announced it will be closed next week, 10-14 August.

Here's a brief refresher on what we know about the school:

Debsirin is a well-known secondary school that has branches across Thailand. The original campus was founded by the country's royal family in 1885.

Many public figures in Thailand have attended the school - including diplomats, athletes, prime ministers, and several royals themselves - and it is widely associated with educational prestige.

Its branch in Nonthaburi, where the shooting happened, is located in the north-western outskirts of Bangkok.

As the final classes of the week started, students began running out of a prestigious school just outside Bangkok.

Here's what we know about what's happened so far:

• Thai police say that a 14-year-old boy killed two of his grandparents at their home, with a 9mm handgun belonging to his grandfather
• He then attacked the Debsirin School, where he was a pupil, just after 10:00 local time

Levels of gun crime are relatively high in Thailand, where gun ownership, both legal and illegal, is widespread.

The country has seen several deadly incidents in recent years:

2026 school siege: In February police arrested a gunman after two people - the school's principal and a student - were injured in a two-hour standoff inside a school near the city of Hat Yai.

2025 market shooting: Five people were killed in a mass shooting at Or Tor Kor Market in Bangkok. The shooter took his own life, and police said he had been in disputes with the market's security guards before.

2023 mall shooting: A 14-year-old boy was arrested after killing two and injuring five others in a mall in Bangkok.

2022 childcare centre attack: A former policeman killed 37 people including 23 children, when he stormed a childcare centre in Thailand's north east. He was killed by police after a manhunt.

2020 shopping centre shooting: A soldier was shot dead by security forces after going on a gun rampage in the Thai city of Nakhon Ratchasima that left 26 dead and over 50 injured. He had killed his commanding officer before stealing weapons from a military camp.

Just after 10:00 local time (03:00 GMT): Shots are reported from the Nonthaburi branch of the Debsirin School on the outskirts of the capital Bangkok.

10:27: The situation is still active at this time, Police Col Passakorn Chaitaweewong tells the BBC.

11:45: The BBC confirms via a police officer that the suspected shooter was 14 years old; local media are now reporting he has been killed.

13:24: Reuters cites police as saying that the gunman shot and killed his grandparents at their home before opening fire at the school.

17:50: We report from a press conference with Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who confirms eight people are dead - the gunman, his grandparents, and five teachers. More than 30 are injured, with nine in serious condition.

Following the shooting at Debsirin School in Thailand's capital Bangkok, we've heard from teachers, pupils, and emergency workers at the scene.

One 31-year-old teacher describes seeing pupils running and screaming from a building at the other end of the school, before later learning one of his friends had been killed.

A female student tells the BBC she was standing in front of a teacher when they were shot, and explains how she escaped by climbing over the school fence.

A rescue worker describes finding the suspected shooter with a pulse, after offering medical attention to students with gunshot wounds.

One 17-year-old student says she could "hear bullets hitting the floor" directly above her and "was afraid I would die".

Another student "didn't think it was a gun at first", telling Reuters he initially thought the noise came from firecrackers before hearing "many shots: Bang bang bang".

Footage has emerged of students sheltering in a classroom together, as bangs that sound like gunshots can be heard.

The students can be seen crouching under desks and chairs and reaching out to each other.

Five teachers were killed by the gunman at the Debsirin Nonthaburi School, and many others were injured.

More than 30 people have been injured in the shooting at a Bangkok school, with nine of them "severely injured", according to Thailand's prime minister.

Anutin Charnvirakul has been speaking to reporters at the scene; we'll bring you more from the prime minister in our next post.

A 17-year-old student from Debsirin Nonthaburi School has recounted hearing multiple loud gunshots while she was in class.

"It seemed the suspect was on the floor directly above us. I could even hear bullets hitting the floor," Pawarisa Maylissa tells AFP news agency.

"I was afraid that I would die, and I was scared that I wouldn't be able to pursue my dreams," says Pawarisa, who hopes to attend medical school.

In a translated interview with Reuters news agency, a rescue worker describes finding the suspected shooter suffering from a gunshot wound.

Kiatikhun Verapongpradith, 47, says he first saw "students who had been shot, some in the arm, some in the back, some in the chest" when he arrived at the school.

After helping some of the victims get medical attention, Kiatikhun says "we heard one gunshot, and police told us there was one injured person".

He adds they "rushed up" and found the suspected shooter had turned the gun on himself "and collapsed".

He says the boy still had a pulse, so they began CPR and organised a board to carry him to hospital.

Kiatikhun adds they also saw "a firearm on the ground, and in his chest pocket we saw bullets".

National police chief police general Kittiratt Phanphet has told the media just now that forensic officers have found the gunman’s shots were quite accurate, with several hitting the vital spots on the body.

He says the police will look into this further.

A 31-year-old teacher, who asked not to be named, tells the BBC he heard gunshots from a building at the other end of the school compound, where the seventh to ninth graders study.

"Then I saw pupils run out, screaming. I asked them what was going on. They said 'there’s a shooting!'" he says.

"One of teachers killed, a Thai-language teacher, was my friend. She was my age. We went to this school together as students. Then we both became teachers at this school," he adds.

The school involved in the shooting, the Debsirin Nonthaburi School, has announced that all activities will be cancelled today and tomorrow due to an "emergency situation".

In a post on Facebook, it has also shared a call for blood donations.

The school is a local branch of the renowned Debsirin School - a century-old educational institution in Bangkok. The original Debsirin School also expressed its "deepest condolences for the loss" in a social media post.

Hours after a shooting at a school in Nonthaburi province, in which five teachers were killed, investigators are examining evidence left behind.
