    British Columbia Premier David Eby is due to hold a news conference in around 30 minutes, at 21:00 local time (04:00 GMT), according to CBC News.

    Police have so far revealed very few details about the attack.

    The premier of Alberta, the province which lies around 160km east of Tumbler Ridge, has also sent her condolences.

    "My thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia today," Premier Danielle Smith says.

    "I can only imagine the absolute devastation that the students, families, staff, and entire community must be feeling right now.

    "To the families grieving, the friends and classmates who are also impacted, and the first responders on the ground — know that Alberta and the whole of Canada is thinking of you and our hearts go out to you and your community."

    The premier of the province of British Columbia, David Eby, has just posted his condolences on X.

    "Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones," he writes.

    "Government will ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy."

    In the news conference, Floyd also confirmed the suspect who was found dead at the school is the same person police described in an alert sent to phones.

    According to Canadian media, the alert described the suspect as a woman in a dress with brown hair.

    The RCMP, Canada's federal police force similar to the US FBI, have just wrapped up their virtual news conference.

    Chief Supt Floyd spoke, but provided few answers as to what happened in the remote community.

    During the update, we learned:

    • Around 100 students and staff were evacuated from the school after officers arrived, responding to calls of an active shooter
    • Police believe they have identified the attacker, but are not publicly releasing their name
    • The motivation for the attack is currently unknown, he said, adding: "I think we will struggle to determine the 'why', but we will try our best to determine what transpired"
    • He declined to say how many victims are children
    • The shooting at the school and at a nearby home are linked, he said, but added that investigators are not yet ready to share the connection

    We have reported that two of the victims were found at a house near the school.

    Chief Supt Floyd says it is too early to identify the connection between the school and the home where they were found.

    "We believe they're connected, but we're not in a position to provide that definitely right now, at this time, what that connection may or may not be."

    RCMP Chief Supt Ken Floyd says it is too early to say whether the death toll will rise.

    The roughly 25 people who suffered non-life-threatening injuries are still being assessed by medical professionals, he says.

  9. Local schools to close for rest of the weekpublished at 03:00 GMT 11 February

    The local school district has just put out a statement, saying classes are cancelled for the rest of the week because of the attack.

    “Due to the tragic events that unfolded in the community of Tumbler Ridge today, Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed for the rest of the week," the statement says.

    "The district will make support available and once we have the locations for where the support will be we will put that information on social media.”

    Nina Krieger, the British Columbia Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has issued a statement on her Facebook page.

    "Today’s devastating events are sending shockwaves through the community and the entire province.

    "My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community.

    "I would like to thank RCMP and the first responders for their immediate and courageous response.

    "We will deploy every resource to support the investigation and the people of Tumbler Ridge."

    The British Columbia RCMP's Major Crime unit is leading the investigation.

    “This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” says RCMP North District Commander, Superintendent Ken Floyd.

    “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident.

    "This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”

    The shooting happened in Tumbler Ridge, which is located around 415 miles (670km) north of Vancouver, the largest city in the province.

    It is primarily known for its coal mines, and the discovery of dinosaur fossils.

    The police statement adds that in addition to the six victims found in the school, and the one person who died while being transported to hospital, two victims were located in a nearby home.

    “As part of the ongoing investigation, police have identified a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident, where two additional victims were located deceased in a residence," it says.

    The statement adds that police are still searching for more potential victims: "Officers are conducting further searches of additional homes and properties to determine whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today’s events.”

  14. What have police said?published at 02:50 GMT 11 February

    Residents in the community of Tumbler Ridge, a municipality in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with a population of less than 2,400 people, were advised to stay inside and lock their doors.

    Police received a report of an active shooter at 13:20 local time, according to a statement from the RCMP.

    "Six additional individuals, not including the suspect, have been located deceased inside the school," the statement says.

    "Two victims have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life‑threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported to hospital.

    "Approximately 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non‑life‑threatening injuries."

    The statement adds that a person "believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury".

    The community lockdown was cancelled after the school was searched, "as police do not believe there are any outstanding suspects or ongoing threat to the public".

    At least nine people have been killed in a shooting in western Canada, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

    Six victims were discovered at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in north-eastern British Columbia, the RCMP says. A seventh died on the way to hospital.

    Two more were found dead at another location, which police believe is connected to the incident. About 25 others have been injured.

    An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appeared to be a self‑inflicted injury, police say.
