My first resolution this year is to master my MSt in AI Ethics. The course at Cambridge is addictive and hugely relevant to our work.

But I confess it’s been tough to return to writing essays, and as ChatGPT is banned for these purposes, we are living on our wits!

I’m also setting myself some more homework.

My second resolution is to properly explore the Bhagavad Gita - a 700-verse Hindu scripture. One of the questions raised by AI is the nature of truth and I’d like to understand what light it brings.

Wishing everyone a joyous and peaceful New Year!

  2. My 2026 resolution: More gratitude, and to move at my own rhythmpublished at 19:24 GMT 31 December 2025

    Ione Wells
    South America correspondent

One of my resolutions is to meet the harder moments of life and work with more conscious gratitude.

Over the past year I reported from South America, the Middle East and the US. Many of the stories were shaped by tragedy, like families torn apart by brutal gang violence and homes and loved ones lost to war.

As the new year begins, I hope for safer, brighter days for the innocent people living through these realities. But also, that the rest of us don’t look away, or take the more ordinary parts of our own lives for granted.

Another resolution is to embrace what in Latin America we call ritmo próprio, or moving at your own rhythm: speeding up when inspired, slowing down when needed, and pursuing what you want without fearing judgement, just never at the expense of others.

  3. A photo a day, more karaoke: Resolutions from the newsroompublished at 19:22 GMT 31 December 2025

Earlier, we brought you some of the resolutions submitted by our teams in the newsroom today - and we have more!

Hafsa Khalil: "Take one photo every day - it has to be spontaneous and of something that evoked a good feeling in that moment."

Elise Wicker: "Listen to full albums, not singles, preferably on vinyl, one a week."

    Imogen James: "Do more karaoke."

Sam Hancock: "Enter and run a half marathon. I'm building up to run my second full-length race (no prizes for what my resolution will be this time next year)."

Katie Williams: "Umm… stop saying ‘umm’ and ‘like’ in every sentence. No more filler words!"

  4. My resolution for 2026: To listenpublished at 19:19 GMT 31 December 2025

    Gary O'Donoghue
    Chief North America correspondent

What I will try to do is the thing that brings me most joy and enlightenment in my work – and that is to listen; just listen to Americans outside DC; beyond the think tanks and the commentariat; in the small towns of Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Alabama and anywhere else I can go.

Those moments when you just sit around a kitchen table; or in a car or a barbecue joint with complete strangers and give them the space to talk about their lives; their hopes and fears, the choices they have to make to get by – those are the moments I have always cherished.

So for me, less leaping in with endless reporter-type questions, just letting people fill the silences and the gaps with their own words.

  5. My 2026 resolution: Get back to places which get less of the world's attentionpublished at 19:17 GMT 31 December 2025

    Lyse Doucet
    Chief international correspondent

2026 is starting without any real sign that major wars of our time are going to end any time soon.

We have to keep reporting on them, including their terrible human cost, as well as any steps, however small, which move closer to peace.

This year, I also resolve to get back to places which get less of the world’s attention, and assistance.

And to seek places and people who are fighting for better futures, in so many ways, and succeeding. None of us want news which is just doom and gloom.

The Vatican's traditional year-end prayer service has taken place in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, where Pope Leo thanked all those who worked through 2025 to "serve pilgrims and make Rome more welcoming".

After the service, he moved to St Peter's Square to view and inspect the Christmas nativity scene ahead of the new year.

There are still a few hours to go before Italy welcomes 2026, but the pontiff is clearly keeping busy up until the end of 2025.

The pair are on a 27-hour drive from Elgin in Scotland to Lorca in Spain, where Laura works as a teacher.

Laura says it’s the first New Year’s Eve she will spend in a car, but she’s excited to spend quality time with her brother.

“It’s the first new year’s that we’ve done this, it’s not normal for us, usually we just stay in Scotland but we thought this year we’d spend some sibling time together and bring in 2026.”

It's almost midnight in western Indonesia - we've been speaking to one woman about how she is celebrating the new year.

It's not unusual for people to travel across cities - even countries - to partake in new year jubilations.

But for Nurul Fadilah, who lives in Bandung, Indonesia, celebrations can be enjoyed from her home terrace.

"I can watch them from my house, enjoy food vendors on my local streets, and then go straight back to bed once midnight hits," she tells me.

Bandung, Nurul says, attracts tourists across Indonesia - making it a prime spot for celebrating the coming of 2026. That said, according to Nurul, it's not as crowded as other parts of the country where celebrations are also taking place.

"It's quieter and less crowded. It gives you the perfect balance of enjoying celebrations, but also space to make personal reflections and spend time with your family."

Nurul says this precise equilibrium will allow her to "celebrate, but keep everyone in mind".

She'll be reflecting with some grilled corn in hand - a staple of new year celebrations in Indonesia.

Aly and Francesca are celebrating their 10th new year away from home together - and their first outside of Europe.

The pair are in Taiwan and have just celebrated the new year with fireworks in Taipei.

"We choose a different destination every year," Francesca says. "We've been to the Faroe Islands, Paris and Iceland to name a few.

"Prague was a lot of fun, [it was] also the 2020 new year. But they all had their own charm, Taiwan is looking good too so far," she says.

"New year can be a time to reflect, a time to party and also to reset, but most importantly to reconnect with each other."
