  4. How an A&E department makes way for patientspublished at 13:12 GMT 22 January

Up to 2,000 staff keep Whiston Hospital in Merseyside running at any one time.

“Our golden time is the morning, it’s crucial that we get morning flow as that’s what prevents us bottlenecking in the afternoon,” says Lyn Swift, patient flow lead nurse.

“We can then hopefully start to decongest A&E a little bit and make way for the next patients coming in.”

Staff gather for the bed meeting four times a day to get an overview of how busy things are at the hospital.

During the second meeting of the day at 12:30 GMT, 145 people are waiting in A&E.

A total of 90 patients have come into A&E since the last meeting at 09:00 and the wait time is just over three hours.

The start of January is often the busiest time of the year. This year is no different. This year has seen a surge in respiratory issues.

“We have two wards which are closed at admission due to norovirus," says Milady Doinog, operational site manager.

    “It's spiking now and again.

“It's so erratic that we have opened some wards and then we close it again because it’s just infection everywhere.”
