Technicians and student volunteers are busy adjusting the telescopes to keep the Sun in view - something they’ll need to keep doing throughout tonight’s eclipse, as the Sun gradually sets.

These telescopes have special filters to limit the wavelengths of light they let through, meaning it’s safe to view the Sun through them.

And they’ll be in demand tonight, as they’re expecting 120 members of the public to come for a look.

This was the first time I've visited Yorkshire Heart since before the Covid-19 lockdown and, boy, has it grown.

From just 35 vines planted in a garden as a hobby back in 2000 to 29,000 vines today, and a thriving family-run business, it’s clear how much hard work and dedication it’s taken to grow and make wine in the north of England.

The minute I arrived I felt a welcoming sense of calm – but I was there for some proper graft.

So, with gloves on and secateurs in hand, I got to understand how important attention to detail is when running a vineyard.

Obviously I couldn’t leave without a tiny taste test.

The Spakouskas family set out with the intention to answer the question: “Can we make good wine in Yorkshire?"

The answer? If it’s from God's Own County, of course it’s good.

A shortfall in government funding is preventing care homes from taking on the number of patients needed to ease pressure on hospital beds, the co-owner of one home says.

Helen Thompson from Ochre Care, which runs two private homes in North Yorkshire, said current funding levels did not match the costs of support needed for many residents coming out of hospital.

Thompson said while her company "absolutely" had capacity, funding from government was "not appropriate to the level of need".

She said as a provider, the company received about £994 a week for each council-funded resident, but the real cost of providing care was up to £1,300 a week.

"About 65% of our residents are not funded to the amount they need to be appropriate to their dependency, so with that, it's the privately-funded residents that subsidise the gap.”

The Department of Health and Social Care said it was tackling the situation with a promise to boost funding by about £4.6bn by 2028-29.

“We are also creating a National Care Service, based on higher quality of care, greater choice and control, and joined-up neighbourhood services,” a spokesperson added.

MPs from across Yorkshire say the anti-social use of fireworks is blighting their communities.

Sue and Kevin Wheeldon in Beverley, East Yorkshire, were called at 07:30 GMT with an urgent mission: to take their grandchildren sledging.

Both are taking turns to push the children down the slope on Beverley Westwood.

"It’s fine at the start but you soon get out of puff," Kevin Wheeldon, 65, says.

Sue Wheeldon, 66, made sure that the children were wrapped up warm for their morning out. “I came up here when I was about their age to sledge," she recalls.

Their eldest granddaughter, 11-year-old Devon, runs back up the hill shouting “again, again!"

She says she loves the snow and wishes it came to Beverley more, but adds: “I wish grandma and grandad could get better at pushing.”

Roads have been blanketed in snow near Whitby, North Yorkshire. Earlier, forecasters said the area could have 25cm (10in) of snow fall by the end of the day.

Farmers across North and West Yorkshire say they are grappling with the impact of prolonged dry conditions which are putting their livelihoods - and the local food supply - at serious risk.

Angela Serino, who runs Beetle Bank Farm near York, fears she will have to reduce the number of animals she keeps because her hay yield this year will be a quarter of the usual amount.

Angela estimates she goes through about half a round bale of hay each day to keep her animals fed.

And although she is used to buying in to top up her own supply, she will now need to buy a lot more.

"It's quite a sad time because we collect animals as we go and keep hold of our favourite ones and that might not be possible for the future if you never know whether your animals have got anything to eat or not," she said.

While most people are still snug in bed, farmers like Rebecca Wilson are already hard at work - checking on livestock, tending to newly-hatched chicks and making the most of every daylight hour.

Rebecca, who runs a farm in the outskirts of Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire, says: “We could be working until midnight this evening, but it’s amazing how quick the time passes because you are always busy.”

Even though it’s due to reach 29C (84F), some of the staff at the Great Yorkshire Show are still dressed in the formal attire of dark suits and bowler hats.

Sunglasses and sunscreen are definitely the order of the day for humans. Ice cream sellers are doing a roaring trade and the queue to refill water bottles is 20-deep.

For those on four legs, I’ve seen animals being hosed down or even given their own fans to help keep them cool.

The parched showground tells its own story of the lack of rain, and the hot weather is due to continue into the weekend.

There may be some showers at the start of next week, but that won’t be enough to end the hosepipe ban for Yorkshire Water customers.
