We're beginning to get more pieces of information following the fire at Le Constellation bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve:
What we know:
- Around 40 people died in the blaze and 115 others were injured, with patients as young as 15 in hospital
- Many of the dead and injured are teenagers - Le Constellation bar was popular with a young crowd
- The fire is thought to have started around 01:30 local time on 1 January
- Witnesses say the flames spread rapidly - this photo shows the moment the ceiling caught fire and this video shows someone trying to put out flames
- Witnesses have said the fire could have been caused by waitresses carrying champagne bottles with "flares" or "candles" on top
What we don't know:
- The cause - officials have refused to comment on speculation that candles or flares may have started the fire
- The victims' identities - but French and Italian authorities say they have citizens missing, including 16-year-old Giovanni from Bologna
- Whether safety standards at the bar are in question after reports of a narrow staircase. The investigation will determine whether or not safety standards were respected, Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud has said
