Image source, ReutersFrance is now waiting to see what decision Marine Le Pen makes about her political future, and whether she will run for the French presidency next year.
It comes after an appeal court in Paris shortened the sentence for her embezzlement conviction, opening up an avenue for the politician to stand in the 2027 French presidential election.
There were three main aspects to today's appeal:
Would the conviction against Le Pen be upheld? It has, with the judge confirming she is guilty of the charges.
Would her sentence be shortened? Yes, her original sentence has been reduced to a three-year prison sentence, with two years suspended and one year wearing an electronic tag.
Has she been cleared to run for office? In theory, yes. The time Le Pen has been barred from public office has been reduced from five years to 45 months, with most of it suspended.
She has already served the 15 months that is not suspended since her original conviction on 31 March 2025.
However, Le Pen has previously said she would not run while wearing an electronic tag as it would prevent her from campaigning properly.
Allies and foes alike are now eagerly awaiting the politician's appearance on French TV tonight at 20:00 local time (19:00 BST).
