Summary

  1. Tories think they'll hold off Reform in Bexleypublished at 06:33 BST 8 May

The Conservatives just held another two seats in Bexley in St Mary’s & St James ward. That’s strong Tory territory, but they say this feeds into the party's view that they’re managing to hold off Reform.

Labour activists and local Labour MPs also look relieved as they manage to hold on to three labour seats in Thamesmead east ward, which is Labour heartland.

Earlier they were looking pretty downbeat when the party lost two seats to Reform UK in Northumberland Heath ward. Reform said it was a “stonking” win.

The Tories also held two seats in Longlands ward earlier.

There's still 36 seats to count here so still awhile to go until we know who wins.

  2. Nail-biting night in Wandsworth ends with no overall controlpublished at 06:23 BST 8 May

    Adina Campbell
    Reporting from Wandsworth

We have been on the edge of our seats and now we know that Wandsworth is moving to no overall control.

It's been a nail-biting night. This result is pleasing for the Tories as they won the most seats, although they were unable to fully take back what was once an iconic Conservative council for more than four decades.

But it's a bitterly disappointing night for Labour and they are gutted.

Unlike most English councils this has been a fight between the two traditional parties and the Conservatives have come out on top.

It's worth saying that the Green Party has done well in this borough and have taken votes from both of their main rivals.

  3. Labour holds on to Ealing as Lib Dems and Greens make gainspublished at 06:13 BST 8 May

The Labour Party has retained control of Ealing council but with a reduced number of seats.

Forty-six Labour councillors were elected, down from 59 in 2022.

The Lib Dems won 13, an increase of seven since last time.

The Greens won five seats, the Conservatives won five and one independent candidate was elected.

  5. When are London's results expected?published at 06:04 BST 8 May

With some boroughs due to declare their results overnight and others not finishing counting until Saturday, it will take a while before we have the full picture of how these local elections have changed the capital.

So far we have had results from:

    • Hammersmith and Fulham - Labour hold
    • Merton - Labour hold
    • Richmond-upon-Thames - Lib Dem hold
    • Sutton - Lib Dem hold
    • Wandsworth - Labour loss to no overall control

The other boroughs which have been counting overnight, meaning we should have results soon, are:

    • Bexley
    • Ealing
    • Havering
    • Kensington and Chelsea
    • Westminster

Other boroughs will announce who has won in their areas later on Friday as counting is taking place during the daytime, apart from the council results for Croydon, Lewisham and Tower Hamlets where counting is taking place on Saturday

The Conservatives have won 29 seats on Wandsworth Council and the Labour Party has won 28 seats, meaning the borough is now in no overall control.

  8. Unpredictable outcome likely in Bexleypublished at 05:44 BST 8 May

    Susana Mendonca
BBC Radio London political reporter in Bexley

Things are moving very slowly here in Bexley. Counting is still ongoing and we’re still waiting for the first ward result to be declared. I’ve been told that we shouldn’t expect to know the outcome until about 06:30 BST.

I’m told there are a lot of wards where ballot paper votes are split between different parties, which makes the outcome really unpredictable.

Reform spokespeople here are still saying they think they will win, while the Tories are still claiming that they think they will hold on so it’s a very confused picture.

I saw the Conservative leader of the council having a friendly chat with one of the local Labour MPs a little earlier. I asked them whether they were working out the terms of a future coalition to keep Reform out here.

They laughed - so probably not.

  9. Tories all smiles at Westminster countpublished at 05:38 BST 8 May

    Barry Caffrey
    Reporting from Westminster

The Conservatives have got 20 seats so far and the Labour Party have got 10 seats here in Westminster.

There are still 24 seats left to declare but it is looking like a good morning for the Conservatives here.

There are lots of smiling, happy faces among the people wearing blue rosettes. We are hopeful for final results before 06:30 BST.

  10. Labour holds off Lib Dems to retain Mertonpublished at 05:34 BST 8 May

    Tony Grew
    BBC London

Labour has won the election in Merton with a majority of three.

The Lib Dems had been hoping to take control of the council, but only won 19 to Labour's 32 seats.

The Conservatives won four and independents won two.

Merton has been Labour controlled since 2014.

  12. Who ran London's councils before these elections?published at 05:27 BST 8 May

Until these elections, Labour ran 21 of London's boroughs, the Conservatives had five, the Lib Dems were in charge of three, the Aspire party ran Tower Hamlets and two other councils were no overall control.

Many political pundits have predicted the capital will look very different future once the votes have been counted.

  13. Labour and Tories fighting a close race in Wandsworthpublished at 05:22 BST 8 May

    Sarah Morris
    Reporting from Wandsworth

You could cut the tension here at the Wandsworth count with a knife as it really could go either way.

The Tories are on 21 seats and Labour has 19.

Both camps are taking it in turns to erupt with applause as each result is announced - it's still too close to call.

Wandsworth was won by the Labour Party in 2022. The Tories had previously run the council since 1978.

  14. Merton deputy leader: Proud of Labour's hard workpublished at 05:16 BST 8 May

    Harry Low
    Reporting from Merton

Councillor Eleanor Stringer, Labour's deputy leader of Merton Council, says she is "really proud of the team and how hard we worked for this election".

They have won 17 of the 22 seats declared so far.

She says: "It tells us that local residents are really happy with what we're delivering in Merton for our residents.

"We've got lower council tax than any of the lived-in boroughs nearby whilst investing in our local services.

"We've got brilliant parks, we've been investing in services like pop-up tips, new street trees, and residents really, really appreciate that.

"It's the local stuff that matters. It's our community and we care about it."

Asked about mounting pressure on the prime minister, she says "it's far too early" to talk about that.

She adds: "I think we need to continue to put the country first, put residents first and stay away from some of those arguments."

  15. Tories: Reform UK 'throwing kitchen sink' at Bexleypublished at 05:09 BST 8 May

    Susana Mendonca
BBC Radio London political reporter in Bexley

A middle aged man in a blue shirt is being interviewed at an election count.

Tom Turrell, the Conservative London Assembly member for Bexley and Bromley, tells me that voters in Bexley are "happy" with the record of the Tory-run council despite it being what he calls one of Reform UK's "top targets in London".

He adds: "It looks like they thought they were going to walk it. They were expecting a whitewash like they got in Kent last year. And it definitely looks like that hasn't happened.

"I think people have realised that they want to keep that and they don't want to risk it with the chaos that they've seen from Reform in Kent."

Counting continues here at Crook Log Leisure Centre in Bexleyheath - we are not expecting a result for a little while.

    Tony Grew
    BBC London

This is big victory for the Lib Dems in Richmond-upon-Thames, taking all 54 seats on the council. The party have ran the council since 2018.

The Greens lost all five of their councillors, which is a reverse for a party that is expecting gains across the capital.

Meanwhile the Lib Dems held Sutton with all but one of the seats.

The party will be hoping to win Merton from Labour.
