    The eight people injured in the shooting were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, the facility confirms in a statement - adding that is "in lockdown" while the suspect remains at large.

    It says six of the victims are in a "critical but stable" condition.

    A seventh person is described as being in a critical condition, while an eighth victim is stable.

    A statement continues: "Rhode Island Hospital is in lockdown at this time but is still accepting emergency department patients."

    Steph Machado, a reporter for the Boston Globe, has been telling BBC News about the atmosphere around Brown University.

    Restaurants around the campus have locked their doors, she says, with staff and customers waiting inside until the emergency order is lifted.

    "There are flashing lights everywhere," she adds.

    The campus is usually a place "where people feel very safe walking around", Machado says. The typically busy student area is "eerily quiet" tonight.

    Nearly four hours after the shooting, Brown University continues to tell its students to keep their doors locked and avoid moving across campus.

    "We know this is a source of tremendous fear and anxiety across our community right now," the university's president, Christina H Paxson, says.

    "We continue to be in lockdown, and it is imperative that all members of our community remain sheltered in place."

    Brown University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the US.

    It is part of the Ivy League, a group of elite universities in the north-east of the country.

    It lies around 50 miles (80km) from Boston and 180 miles from New York City.

    Students were on campus this weekend for final exams, marking the end of the autumn semester.

    Officials say the shooting took place in the Barus & Holley engineering building, located on the eastern end of the downtown campus.

    The seven-storey building is home to the School of Engineering and the physics department, and includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and three lecture halls.

    The shooter left the campus on Hope Street, deputy chief of Providence Police Tim O'Hara tells reporters.

    Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee says "we are actively monitoring the shooting at Brown University".

    Writing on Facebook, he adds that state police are working with Rhode Island Emergency Management and local law enforcement on the situation.

    There are still some confusing pieces of information as to whether the suspect is in custody or not.

    A little earlier, President Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the suspect had been apprehended, however in a follow-up posted moments ago the US president says: "The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement.

    "The suspect is NOT in custody."

    Trump is travelling back to the White House having spent time at the Army-Navy game in Baltimore earlier this evening.

    President Donald Trump says the "FBI is on the scene" of the shooting at Brown University.

    He writes on Truth Social: "I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island.

    While the president says the suspect has been apprehended, this has not yet been confirmed by police.

    As we've been reporting, in its latest update at 17:11 local time (22:11 GMT), Brown University said the search for the suspect or suspects continued.
