Derbyshire County Council leader Alan Graves has released a statement, saying he was "deeply saddened" by the incident.

"My thoughts are with those injured, their families, and everyone affected," he said.

"I want to thank the emergency services for how quickly they responded and Derbyshire Constabulary as they continue their investigations.

"If you have any information surrounding the events of last night, no matter how small, please contact Derbyshire Constabulary.”

In a statement released this morning, Rt Rev Malcolm Macnaughton, Bishop of Repton, said the incident "has shaken us all".

"We like to think of our city as a safe place for everyone," he said.

"Our prayers at Derby Cathedral and in churches across the Diocese of Derby today are with those injured and with all those who witnessed what happened.

"We pray also for those receiving treatment in hospital. May God bring peace and healing to our city today."

The Very Rev Peter Robinson, Dean of Derby, also released a statement, which said: "I was deeply shocked to hear overnight of the incident in Friar Gate.

"The thoughts and prayers of the Derby Cathedral community are with all those who have been injured and for the emergency services who are caring for all affected by this tragic event."

O'Dwyers Bar in Friar Gate has said on social media it will remain closed today while police carry out investigation work in the area.

The post said: "We are deeply saddened by the horrific incident that took place on Friar Gate last night.

"Our thoughts are with all those injured, their families, and everyone impacted by what has happened.

"No-one should ever have to experience something like this on a night out in our city.

"Derby is a community, and today we stand together."

Police forces release the ethnicity and nationality of suspects in high-profile cases.

The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said the aim was to reduce the risk to public safety where there are high levels of misinformation about an incident.

The guidance, which came into force in August, forms part of a wider review of the College of Policing's professional practice for media relations.

It was developed following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service and Home Office in recognition of "public concerns" and to ensure police processes were "fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread".

Flowers have been left just outside the police cordon on Friar Gate.

BBC reporter Steve Beech remains at the police cordon in Derby.

He says a pair of forensic officers in white suits have arrived at the scene and are walking along Friar Gate taking pictures.

Five shoes remain scattered on the pavement, he adds.

There's an eerie feel to Friar Gate this morning. Very quiet but with lots of police and growing numbers of reporters and photographers.

Baggy Shanker, Labour MP for Derby South, posted on social media overnight.

He said: "My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected and with their loved ones.

"Thank you to the emergency services for their response."

Shanker also repeated advice from Derbyshire Police to avoid the area and for any witnesses to come forward.

An eyewitness told the the Derby Telegraph, external they were at a bar nearby and had come outside because "someone said a load of people had been hit by a car".

They said: "Everyone was talking about it and panicking, we know people who were in other bars and thought it might have been them.

"It's so sad, everyone is so shook up. People have been crying, I just can't believe something like this has happened."

One of the newspaper's reporters Oscar Fisher went to the scene at about midnight, noting the streets had "fallen silent" at a time in the city centre when they should be "filled with students and locals enjoying the nightlife".

He said debris remained scattered across in Friar Gate, which is "usually one of Derby's busiest streets".

Along with Sadler Gate and Iron Gate, Friar Gate is one of the most popular stretches for people enjoying a night out in Derby city centre.

The road features a high concentration of pubs, late bars and restaurants. The time when the pedestrians were struck - 21:30 GMT - would have been one of the busiest times of the week.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg: "My thoughts are with anyone that’s been affected by this, those who’ve been injured or hurt, and their family members at this really difficult time."

She added: "The police are actively investigating. We don’t believe there is wider cause for the public to be alarmed.

"The police have made an arrest, and the home secretary is being kept updated on this."

Here's a recap of what we know so far about the incident in Derby last night.

Derbyshire Police said seven people were injured when a black Suzuki Swift car was driven into pedestrians in Friar Gate at about 21:30 GMT.

Seven people suffered non life-threatening injuries and officers confirmed no-one died in the incident.

The seven injured were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and taken to the Royal Derby Hospital and Nottingham's Queen’s Medical Centre.

A man in his 30s, who is originally from India, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving. He remains in police custody.

Police said there was "no ongoing risk to the public".

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing and police are keeping an "open mind as to the motives".

Derbyshire Police said cars that are parked in Friar Gate will not be able to be moved until the cordon has been lifted and the road has been reopened.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused, please keep an eye on our Facebook page for further updates," said the force.

Catherine Atkinson, Labour MP for Derby North, told BBC Radio Derby she was shocked by the incident.

"You see these incidents around the world but you never expect them to happen in your city, your home," she said.

"I can't imagine what people who have been hurt or witnessed the incident are going through.

"There will be many people throughout the night and today who will be desperately checking with loved ones to see if they are ok."

Atkinson said she would be raising the subject of cars being driven at people in Parliament.

"I am concerned and I will be raising this with government," she said.

"We need to see if guidelines will be reviewed because we are seeing an increased amount of incidents where cars are being used as weapons."

He said things were currently very quiet and there was a fair amount of debris on the road.

Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council, has said in a statement. "I am horrified by the incident in our city centre on Saturday evening, where several pedestrians were injured after being struck by a vehicle.

"My thoughts, and those of the entire city, are with those injured, their families, and everyone who witnessed this distressing event

"I want to thank the emergency services for their rapid response and professional care under such difficult circumstances.

"Our frontline responders do an incredible job, and the safety of our residents remains our absolute priority

"We are working closely with Derbyshire Police as they investigate the circumstances of this incident. I urge anyone with information to contact the Police immediately to assist with their investigation.
