Summary

  1. All up on the Isle of Wightpublished at 11:11 BST 8 May

Every seat on the Isle of Wight's unitary authority was up for election.

The council was being run by the Alliance group, which comprises Independents, Our Island councillors and Greens.

But two of the three by-elections in 2025 were won by Reform, who signalled this is a target council for them. We are expecting the result at about 15:00 BST.

There are 18 seats being contested.

  3. Final result in for Hampshire - no party majoritypublished at 10:04 BST 8 May

  4. Counting expected to begin soon in west Oxfordshirepublished at 09:51 BST 8 May

The counters are getting set up here in west Oxfordshire, with counting expected to begin at 10:00 BST.

The council here is led by the Lib Dems, and propped up by Labour and the Greens.

Only a third of council seats are being contested today.

Without the 16 seats up for election, the Lib Dems only have a lead of four over the Tories, and 5 over Labour.

That means it wouldn’t take a big swing for the Conservatives - or Labour for that matter - to try and make a move.

If not a lot changes, we can expect the Lib Dems to remain the largest party, and stay as leaders.

  6. Roadworks topped concerns for island voterspublished at 09:14 BST 8 May

Counting will get under way later this morning on the Isle of Wight.

The state of the roads on the island was high on the list of voters' concerns.

Several major projects - including Fairlee Road in Newport and Horsebridge Hill between Cowes and Newport- have meant long diversions and delays for motorists in recent months.

Residents told the BBC that the cost of living and ferry travel were big issues, but the scheduling of roadworks and road closures is the main concern.

  11. Southampton Itchen MP backs Prime Ministerpublished at 07:39 BST 8 May

    Tristan Pascoe
    Political Reporter

Southampton Itchen's Labour MP Darren Paffey, who previously served as a councillor in the city, has backed PM Sir Keir Starmer.

"If we start now changing leaders every 18 months to two years, as was happening under the Conservatives, we will be laughed at," he said.

"This is not, as John Major said recently, a game show, this is about the hard work of government. We don't need more chaos."

Speaking as Labour lost overall control of Southampton City Council, the MP said: "This is clearly a very difficult set of election results.

He said this is "reflective of the national picture," adding that "we are going to need time to reflect on what these results mean locally".

  12. Political Editor Emily Hudson sums up the nightpublished at 07:06 BST 8 May

    Emily Hudson
    BBC South Political Editor

No doubt about it, it was a bad night for Labour. Losing control of Southampton City Council, wiped out on Portsmouth and five seats down on Oxford City. They lost to the Greens and Lib Dems. Reading, the only real success story, but they were never going to lose there.

It was a pretty bad night for the Conservatives. Perhaps not as "seismic" as predicted, but with seats still to declare, it looks like they could be 20 seats down on Hampshire County Council. Maybe they'll end up the largest party, but it's not a given. But they might take some comfort from the fact there's still a true blue heartland in Fareham, even with the MP Suella Braverman switching allegiance to Reform and telling true Conservatives to come with her. The Tories kept control there comfortably, Reform won only a single seat.

It was a pretty good night for the Liberal Democrats - they'll be celebrating taking back control of Portsmouth City Council. Reform had been confident there. But the high turnout wasn't all for them. The Lib Dems have also taken four seats on the county council (and rising) and two in Southampton.

The Greens too can go to bed happy, gaining five seats on Oxford city and four seats on Southampton.

But as I write this at 06:30 BST was it really the night Reform UK in the South wanted? Without doubt the party has something to celebrate. The party added seats and in many of the ones their candidates didn't win, they came second. But the Reform hasn't yet managed to swipe a council, and I think they'll feel disappointed about that. Reform has probably been affected by the issues with the wrong ballot papers going out in parts of Havant the most, expect calls for a full investigation.

A few hours respite, then we go again, counting takes place today for Isle of Wight, Wokingham, Cherwell, West Oxfordshire, Winchester, Rushmoor, Basingstoke. Coffee anyone?

  15. Results still to come in the Southpublished at 06:16 BST 8 May

It's a long night for anyone waiting for the results of Hampshire County Council, Havant Borough Council and Gosport Borough Council with counting still underway.

  16. RESULT: Labour loses in Southamptonpublished at 05:50 BST 8 May

  17. Analysis: Reading Borough Councilpublished at 05:27 BST 8 May

    Patrick O'Hagan
    Political reporter, Berkshire

This was supposed to be a night where Reform made their mark in Reading, and while they started the night with one councillor on the borough and were hoping to gain a few more, that's not how it turned out as they no longer have even the one councillor.

The Greens will have rolled into their beds in the early hours happy with their night's work after gaining an extra three seats.

While there had been a lot of nervous Labour faces as the count got underway last night they'll be feeling relieved at the way it panned out.

Labour remain comfortably in control of Reading Borough Council dropping just a few seats. As for the Conservatives they surprised many. They now have a couple more councillors than they did this time yesterday.

  18. Final results in for Oxfordpublished at 05:22 BST 8 May

  20. Oxford gets first black mayorpublished at 05:08 BST 8 May

    Victoria Walton
    South of England, Oxford

Oxford will have its first black mayor after Chewe Munkonge was re-elected.

It was announced in March that councillor Munkonge, who grew up in Zambia, could take on the ceremonial role subject to his re-election as city councillor for Quarry and Risinghurst.

The office of Lord Mayor can only be awarded to an elected official, who then holds the position for a year before passing it on to a new appointee.

We wrote about this more here.
