I was one of the lucky ones who managed to catch David Bowie in concert last week at the Wembley Arena, and what a tip top show it was folks...

"Bowie's variation on 'All The Young Dudes' had everybody bellowing along from the back of the house to the front..."

He delivered a performance that totally justifies his standing in pop as one of the most consistent, innovative stars of all.

A towering influence in music as well as fashion and culture generally, he mixed songs from his acclaimed new album Reality with his impressive back catalogue, playing everything from 'New Killer Star' to 'The Man Who Sold The World' thru to a great version of 'Ashes To Ashes'.

Other standout moments for me were 'Life On Mars', 'Heroes', and 'Never Get Old', while his variation on 'All The Young Dudes' had everybody (and I do mean everybody) bellowing along from the back of the house to the front.

And what a band! Talk about as tight as a camel's wotsit in a sandstorm! And bassist Gail Ann Dorsey's duet with DB on 'Under Pressure' was flawless, too.

mutated and evolved

David Bowie
Effortlessly cool and relaxed: Bowie onstage during the Reality tour

Bowie has always been out there mining his own seam, thankfully. Before him, we have to remember, pop stars normally stuck to the one tried and tested formula.

They certainly didn't wear lurex, or dresses, or make up and nor did they change their image with every album release!

He's constantly mutated and evolved, not always getting it right - Tin Machine being a case in point, and some of the late 80s and early 90s solo stuff - but fair play to him for never standing still and constantly testing himself...and us.

I think you know you've had a great night when, on the journey home, you and your friends are comparing notes and reliving every moment.

Top night Mr Bowie. You STILL the man!
