Hi
my name is Becky, I'm 22 and I am currently living in a small town
called Toriya in Japan. I was born and bread in Boston, I went to
school at Conway Primary School and then Boston High School. It
was at the later school that my interest in Japan was first awakened.
When I was 15 the first ever exchange between Boston and Mikawa
was organised, and I was one of the students that took part. 7 years
later, I moved to Japan to teach English to all the students in
Toriya between the ages of 4 and 15! It was a very daunting move,
especially as I spoke no Japanese. But 1 year later I'm still here
and I'm enjoying myself that much that I'm planning on staying for
a few more!
At this time of the year the thing that I miss the most was not
being able to get fireworks to celebrate Guy Fawkes night. It might
sound a very strange thing to miss, but it was always a big occasion
for my family, as we all love watching fireworks. You can get some
brilliant fireworks in Japan, but they are only sold during the
festival season, which is April to September.
I tried to explain what Guy Fawkes night is about and why we celebrate
it to a number of teachers at work, and they looked at me as though
I had gone crazy! When you actually try to explain Guy Fawkes night
it is a very strange festival! But the strange thing is that many
people are now starting to have Halloween parties in Japan. This
maybe due to the increasing number of foreigners, especially Americans,
that are moving to Japan. I'll just have to try to get my town to
adopt Guy Fawkes night!
