We
currently live in Princeton. No, not the famous one with the University.
Our Princeton is a town of about 5000 people just over one hours
drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
This is what is known as the Midwest. Those of you who remember
your 'O' level geography will recall that the Midwest is home to
thousands of square miles of wheat fields and Prairies. But there
is more to it than that. It is a state of great scenic beauty and
lively exciting cities.
Like all Englishmen living in America, I miss my fish 'n' chips.
I occasionally find a place selling what claims to be fish 'n' chips.
But they are always a perfect square of processed fish with perfect
square cut chips. When I next get back to England I'm heading straight
to "The Ocean" chippy on the high street!
Finding other foodstuffs is not too much of a problem as there are
many ex-pat retailers on the internet to supply me with HP sauce,
Marmite, Golden Shred and Penguins. I even discovered my local supermarket
stocks Weetabix! For an Englishman in America, BBC America on cable
TV is a godsend. I have to have an occasional fix of Father Ted
and Monty Python. I have even got my wife interested in "Changing
Rooms".
Then if I want to see a quality English documentary there is also
Discovery or History International. Home to my favourite show "Time
Team". This year I have really been missing cricket, both 1 day
and test matches. But last year and the year before I really missed
Rugby League. But thanks to Fox Sports world I can see cricket,
even if it is 2 years old, as well as Australian Rugby League. This
is also where I can get my fix of Manchester United when I need
to.
But, despite what you may think. I don't spend my days watching
TV and pining for all things English. Minnesota is a great place
to live.
Don't forget you can keep up with the latest from the other ex-pats
