Introduction
The rose-red city of Toulouse has a distinctly colourful character
all of its own in its instantly recognisable architecture. The
term rose-red comes from the small red bricks used in the construction
of many of the buildings in the historic centre.
Proud of its long association with the arts, Toulouse is still
a seat of culture and learning. It boasts a large student population
and a wide array of museums like the Musée des Augustins.
The city greets the visitor with a wealth of neat alleyways
and squares, the biggest being the impressive Place du Capitol.
Toulouse maintains a refreshingly southern pace and flair thanks,
in part, to the warm climate. The city lends itself well to
quiet exploration on foot. The visitor can take in historic
sites like the Romanesque basilica of Saint Sernin, stroll along
the smart shopping streets or simply watch people go by from
a café in the Place Wilson.
