At the next junction, take the steep climb up to
the right, leaving the house called Grasmere to your left. Half-way
up the hill, there is a crossroads; turn right here, and at the
T-junction, turn left. This brings you to La Croix de la Bataille.
There is a triangular green and a well here.
Turn right (not onto the main road) and immediately
right again, passing Grouville Mill on your left. Halfway down the
hill is a fork in the road; take the left fork, Rue Crèvecour,
and cross the main road at the bottom of the hill into Rue des Nouettes
(take care at this junction).
At the next main road, turn right into Rue de la
Lourderie. At the main road, turn left. Notice the 18th century
Jersey Round Tower on the right, just before La Rocque Harbour.
Turn inland now in the direction of Grouville Church,
along the B37 past the Chapel of St Peter La Rocque and follow the
main road to the next major junction. The soil in this area is ideal
for growing delicious outdoor tomatoes. Turn right in the direction
of Gorey (A5). Turn almost immediately left at Fauvic House, past
Le Marais de la Cocque pumps and lavoir on the right, and the walled
garden of Le Parcq Farm on your left.
Fork right after the farm, and turn right just past
the house on the right called La Prévalaie. This leads to
Grouville School, where you turn left.
Cross the main road by the cemetery. This lane takes
the cyclist through Grouville Marsh, a nature reserve especially
attractive to migrant birds during the winter months. At the T-junction
by Les Près Manor, turn right. The next turning on the right
(opposite Gorey House) leads to the Jersey Pottery.
From Gorey House continue to the T-junction; in
the Spring the sloping flelds or ‘côtils’ are
used to grow Jersey Royal potatoes. Turn left up the hill. It is
steep, hut the views are superb. At the top of the hill, follow
the lane to the main road, then turn right. After a short distance,
turn right at the T-junction - a short detour to the left will bring
you to Ransom's Garden Centre — then first left, to the Dolmen
and Anne Port. Notice the wonderful road name! The former garrison
on the right is Le Haut de la Garenne, location of the studios for
the ‘Bergerac’ series.
Follow signs to the Dolmen, which is well worth
a visit. Turn right down the steep hill to Anne Port, passing the
Anne Port Bay Hotel on your right. At the bottom of the hill is
Jeffrey’s Leap (Le Saut Geffroy), a place of execution in
former times. Turn north along the coast road, passing Les Arches
Hotel on the left and the Archirondel Café on the right.
Look carefully for the next ‘green lane’
off to the left, Route des Viviers (becomes Rue du Champs du Rey),
second left after Archirondel Cafè. There are lovely views
from this lane across St. Catherine’s Bay.
At the main road turn left, then immediately right
into Rue des Charrières, quite a steep hill. At the very
top of the hill turn right, drop down into the valley and tip to
the main road. Turn left.
St Martin’s Church is on the right and the
Royal Hotel on the left. At the Royal Hotel, cross the main road
into Rue de Payn, then left into La Longue Rue and across the main
road in the direction of St. Catherine’s (B62). Turn right
opposite Les Petits Champs (do not go down the hill!). Follow this
lane to the junction with the main road and cross straight over
into the Rue des Alleurs. At the road-sign ‘Rue de Ministre’,
fork right, then first left half-way down the hill into Rue de la
Chouquerterie.
Turn right at the bottom of the hill at Les Vaux
Farm. The lane becomes Rue St Julien, then Rue de la Bachauderie.
Look out for the peacocks!
Turn sharp left just after the small group of cottages,
past the granite Champs Colin Guest House, and right at the main
road to La Hougue Bie. A visit to this remarkable place is a must.
Leaving La Hougue Bie, turn left out of the entrance
and bear left into Rue des Pigneaux. Turn left at the T-junction
into Rue de la Coinmune, cross the main road into Rue de la Parade
and first right into Rue du Paradis. Fork right half-way down this
narrow lane, and turn left at the T-junction. Cycle down the hill
as far as the first crossroads. Turn right into Rue de la Rerraire,
then left into La Fréminerie, the first turning on the left.
At the bottom of the hill turn right into Rue St Thomas.
