Cartographers, or mapmakers, played an indispensable role in the Plantation of Ulster surveying the confiscated lands for the Crown. They carried out their work under the protection of armed guards and were considered no better than spies by the native Irish. Thomas Raven, famous for his depiction of the London Companies’ lands, was a highly skilled English cartographer who eventually turned his hand to private work.
 Dr. Audrey Horning, an archaeologist at Queen’s University Belfast, describes some of his work on the Clandeboye estate in North Down.
