Our next pose is inspired by Angelica Kauffmann's Colour, external.

This painting is one of a set of four that represent the 'Elements of Art', as outlined in Joshua Reynold's Discourses on Art. The other three elements are invention, composition and design.

Swiss artist Kauffman, who had a successful career in London and Rome, is known for her depictions of strong female bodies, inspired by works of the Italian Renaissance. Her paintings are often rich in symbols. In the painting, a chameleon represents the rich and diverse colours of nature.

  10. Botticelli's The Birth of Venuspublished at 21:32 BST 12 September 2021

Tonight's next pose is inspired by one of the most famous paintings in Western art, Botticelli's Birth of Venus, external.

In Roman mythology, Venus is the Goddess of love and beauty. For this painting, Botticelli drew inspiration from classical statues. The pose is modest and Venus covers her nakedness with her long hair.

The work was probably commissioned by the Medici family in the late 15th Century. The Medicis played a hugely influential role in Florentine artwork, and commissioned many iconic paintings during their reign.

  16. Meet our model: James Guy ✍️published at 21:16 BST 12 September 2021

James Guy, Bury's swimming superstar, is the perfect model for this pose.

The version of Discobolus we are looking at tonight was used on all the posters advertising the 1948 London Olympic Games. So asking James to replicate this image of the ultimate Olympian, 2000 years in the making, couldn't feel more appropriate.

James has won medals at every level since making his senior debut back in 2013, capping his career with gold in this year's Olympics - but how will adapt the challenge of being a life model?

  17. Diskobolospublished at 21:16 BST 12 September 2021

Our first exercise this evening is based on a bronze statue of a discus thrower. It was created by the Greek sculptor Myron around 460-450BC.

Myron's original hasn't survived, but several copies still exist. Our model James is basing his pose tonight on The Townley Diskobolos:, external a marble statue owned by The British Museum.

In the 18th Century, when The Townley Diskobolus was excavated, most collectors wanted to own complete statues even if that meant sacrificing authenticity. The find was restored with a head from another sculpture, which was attached at the wrong angle. Another copy of Myron's work, believed to be closer to the original, is owned by the National Roman Museum in Italy. In this version, the discus thrower is looking backwards rather than down at the ground.

You can find out about other paintings and copies of the diskobolus, external on the Art UK website
