Music producer Goldie is hopeful that Brexit will effect the music industry in "a good way".

Speaking on the red carpet at the Ivor Novellos awards, he said: "Where else can we get people lamenting for a better side of the day?

"It's gonna get worse before it gets better but that's good."

He added: "'It's good that people can get out of their comfort zone."

The jungle star - whose new album comes out next month, also spoke about his thoughts on the current state of chart music, which he labelled "very generic".

"It needs to get back to being personal," he said. "There's nothing better than the written word. It lasts forever."

  4. More clubbers took MDMA last year than used energy drinks.published at 13:16 BST 18 May 2017

    Mark Savage
Music reporter at The Great Escape

    ClubbersImage source, Getty Images

That's one of the facts revealed at The Great Escape festival, where a day-long conference on drugs and the music industry is taking place.

Duncan Dick, editor of Mixmag magazine, said 79% of clubbers took the drug, the primary ingredient of Ecstasy - known as 'molly', last year.

The figure has risen for the last five years, he added, citing the global drug survey.

"Ecstasy is more fashionable than it's ever been," said Dick, noting that the strength of pills was simultaneously on the increase.

Drug use is "inextricably linked to dance music," he added. "It's part of the culture. A lot of people would love it to go away. It's not going to go away."

Club owners at the conference said education was they key to tackling drug abuse.

Sacha Lord from Manchester's Warehouse Project, said clubs had a responsibility to warn customers when dangerous or doctored drugs were being sold in their city - either through flyers or social media.

But he warned that many clubs could not talk to customers about drug use, because that amounted to an admission that drug-taking occurred on their premises could jeopardise their licence.

One club that nearly did lose its licence was London's Fabric - which temporarily faced closure after the drug-related deaths of two 18-year-olds in June and August last year.

    FabricImage source, Getty Images

The venue's Andy Blackett said that, since re-opening, it was taking as many precautions as it could to protect its customers.

That includes ID checks on the door, extra medics and barring customers under 19.

They also have floor-walkers to keep an eye on customers throughout the night. "If someone is looking a bit worse for wear, we take them into a welfare centre, which is like an amnesty room," he said.

Lord, who employs a similar system in Manchester, added: "If something goes wrong in our venue, that customer's got a fighting chance of surviving, because we've got all the facilities in the venue."

However, they criticised some of the measures that had been imposed upon them - including a licensing condition that requires the Warehouse Project to give clubbers a lollipop as they leave the venue, the theory being that this will prevent shouting and fights that disturb local residents.

Blackett noted that Fabric's customers had to "empty your pockets into a bowl because according to the police, everyone keeps their drugs in their pockets," prompting laughter from the audience.

Natalie Wainwright, who lost her brother to an ecstasy overdose in 1997, said "clubs like Fabric do more to protect clubbers than the police or government".

Like the club owners, she felt that efforts to impose an outright ban on drug-taking at music venues were unrealistic.

"You can line 20 kids up against an electric fence and say don't touch it," said Blackett. "I guarantee you, five of them will touch it."

And we will be broadcasting a special edition of Music News LIVE from The Great Escape on Friday, so tune in for all the news, gossip and tips on some of the bands to see this year.

Chic guitar legend Nile Rodgers discovered the news about the death of Chris Cornell on the way from his hotel to the Ivor Novello awards in London.

"I just heard the news as I was leaving my hotel and it broke my heart.

"I was sort of hoping it was a joke. But my friend told me and was crying and I could tell by her state it was serious and real."

The songwriter said he knew Cornell "very, very, very well".

"Chris and I were friends for maybe 4 or 5 years," he said on the red carpet.

"Our friendship was probably based on mutual admiration of musicianship. But we would hang around with each other's crews and go to each other's concerts.

  16. Review: Flyying Colours at The Islingtonpublished at 10:56 BST 18 May 2017

    Paul Glynn
    Music News LIVE reporter

    Flyying Colours

Over the past few years we've seen a flurry of top Aussie guitar talent explode all over the psych rock scene, with Tame Impala leading the charge and Pond and the ludicrously-named King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard not far behind.

Now a new name for that list: Flyying Colours.

The Melbourne band boast all the relevant shoegaze credentials from dreamy perfect psych pop melodies to a purposefully mis-spelt name.

The spirit of the early Verve was alive and well in support band, Portsmouth psych rockers Is Bliss, external.

Then, lashings of feedback were poured over the Aussie band's hypnotic pop/rock tunes like Running Late, Long Holiday and Wavy Gravy - creating a warm fuzzy feeling inside The Islington pub in North London, on an otherwise miserable spring evening.

Fans of Slowdive, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana and the Jesus and Mary chain will love this lot.

Go and see them and stare at your shoes or just lie on your bed and be hypothesized.

Whatever you do remember the name - even if they can't spell it.
