Episode 1: Meet the group

Laughing at a mate's unfunny jokes is the sign of a pal-and-a-half.

The other night's conversation, external between the OHS crew - about who is single, who is kinda single, who can't really tell the difference - got us thinking about this article. Is 'no label' dating the way?

Yes, we mean you!

When you wake up, hungover, trying to piece the night together.

Personally, my favourite chat-up line is: hey, are you the other side of my pillow? 'Cos you're really cool.

Sav, a wedding planner from Swansea, might be only 22, but she’s been working since she was 16. Girl, you deserve a month in Spain.

She’s travelling with her mate Yaz, who’s 26 and a yoga teacher and call centre worker. She might be a vegan, but Yaz can’t wait to ‘meat’ new people during her One Hot Summer adventure.

Meat? Geddit? Look, we’re going to be together for the next four weeks, so get used to the puns, okay?

“It’s complicated” = I’m in a relationship but am also open to other dating opportunities

“It’s complicated” = I’m 'seeing someone' but we’ve not defined our relationship and I don’t want to be the first one to do it in case they don’t feel the same way

We hear ya Megan! She’s 21, from West Yorkshire, and is coming to Spain with her best mate Lewis (22). They’ve been best friends for 10 years, and it’s fair to say both of them are fond of a party. They go out as much as they can, especially when they’re on holidays together.

Speaking of, Megan’s still mad that, on a recent trip to Malta, she paid for a hotel but only spent one night there due to partying so much. Lesson learned, girl!

“This summer I need to decide where my future is."

So says Luke, who is 23 and is trying to decide whether to take a leap and become a full-time music manager and DJ.

He’s travelling to Spain with his mate Sam (24). The two of them have been friends since they were six - and they met at Beavers! (All together now: awwwwww!).

For Sam, the trip to Spain is very much about showing Luke that they can make this DJ thing a reality. In the meantime, you all should know that Sam apparently knows the lyrics to every One Direction song.

“I’m ready to trade in tractors for sunbeds.”

Aren’t we all, Aidan? Aren't we all? Well, maybe not tractors, but we know what Bedfordshire boy Aidan (20) means.

A country boy to the core, Aidan doesn’t tend to venture further than Devon. His mates - who he’s met mostly through being a member of a local Young Farmers Club - have all gone on off on a holiday together.

So he’s coming to Spain by himself. But he’s been learning Spanish in advance - well, he can ask, ‘Where is my cow?’, which is sure to come in useful.

“Spain means freedom.”

Aimeé is 19, and studying in a performing arts school. It was there that she met Rashida (20) and Izzy (19). All three are West End musical fanatics, and after a demanding year of course work, they’re ready to kick back and have some fun.

With maybe the odd showtune thrown in here and there*.

These wise Rihanna-ish words come from Catford boy Chris - and all we can say is: “Amen”.

Chris is 23, and he’s coming to Spain with his mates from London, Reenel (20) and Shaq (20). This is the first time the three of them have travelled abroad together.

But, as the ‘older man’ of the group, Chris has a bit of experience on party holidays to Ayia Napa and Ibiza, so he’s more than willing to show the younger lads the ropes.

So what is One Hot Summer?

Glad you asked! We’ve found 13 people from across the UK - a mix of five groups of mates and one brave solo traveller - who come together as one group for an epic holiday around Spain.

The idea is to see how people from all kinds of backgrounds and experiences get on while travelling together in another country. It’s about watching them take a break from their everyday lives and adapt in real-time to new situations and friendships.

Basically, it’s about growing up and learning new things about yourself - which we all have to do, whether we like it or not - so you might as well be spending time in the Spanish summer sunshine along the way, right?

We’ll be introducing our One Hot Summer gang throughout the day here and on our social media channels. Over the next six weeks, we’ll have daily updates and videos from them on the ground on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, and a weekly catch-up episode on iPlayer every Sunday.

Well, hello!

For the next six weeks, this will be the base - the holiday villa, if you will (or, let’s be honest, the budget hostel) - for all things One Hot Summer.

Of course you will all be following the real-time updates from One Hot Summer on BBC Three’s social channels, external - right? RIGHT? - but here we’ll be logging all of the gang’s adventures in Spain, with daily updates from our contributors, so there’s no fear of you missing out on anything.
