Darrell’s Letters – Week Seven

Hello there. I’m Darrell Rivers and I’ve just started attending Malory Towers. Will you be my pen pal? I’ll write to you each week and it would be lovely to have you write back.

Seeing my parents was wonderful and they even had a suprise for me, my little sister Felicity! I just wanted the day to be perfect for them and I certainly didn’t want my exam results to ruin it. I also didn’t want them to worry about me being lonely at Malory Towers, so I was devestat upset when Alicia changed her mind from spending the day with us to spending it with her best friend, Betty. The day was going rather well as I changed the subject from my exam results and then I went on to take first place in the 100-yard dash! I won after a false start, which made me think of my false start at St Hilda’s and how I wanted to do so much better at Malory Towers. Well, I didn’t get very good exam results and had to admit to not having a best friend. Mother told me she didn’t have a best friend until she was eighteen, which made me feel better and Daddy told be that ‘life will always put up obstacles, you have to find your own way through’. My parents and Miss Grayling agreed on a rather large obstacle for me – to give up lacrosse! I couldn’t let that happen, it helps me with my temper, so I struck a balance (as Mother said) by making a deal with Miss Grayling - I’d take Dreaded Remidial class, which means a lot of extra work, as long as I could keep playing lacrosse. Turns out that Pamela will be my student teacher this term as she runs Remidial class and used to be in it herself! Well, that certainly gives me hope. If you could plan the perfect day with your family, how would it go?

My reply to your letters

Dear Friends (msp), Your perfectly planned days sound deliteful (msp)! Although some of you admit that it probably wouldn’t go exactly as planned. Hearing about all of the scrummy food you would eat has made me really want another picnic or midnight feast. Visiting parks and the seaside would be part of my perfect day too – I was lucky enough to have a seaside picnic with my family on Open Day. Just thinking of the cold chicken and pickles is making my mouth water. I would love to travel like some of you and go swimming and cycling! We are all so alike. Then finish the day with a cup of hot cocoa. Perfect! I would definitely keep something from a day like that to remember it by - I could use the box Felicity gave me to keep all my special things in. It was so thoughtful and lovely of her to give me a gift, she’ll make a wonderful Malory Towers girl some day.

My next letter will be delivered here.
