We
went along to the Castle one October evening just before Halloween to
find out what secrets might be hidden in its ancient stones.
As night fell, armed only with a candle, we explored the remains of the
castle with its custodian Steve Coulson and, conquering our fears (sort
of!), the team went underground into the magazine where marks made by
prisoners over 400 years ago can still be seen.
Scary stuff...but we didn't find any ghosts!
Pontefract
Castle is a scheduled ancient monument in the guardianship of Wakefield
District Council although it is still the property of Her Majesty the
Queen as part of the Duchy of Lancaster. Opening hours are 08.30am-dusk
on weekdays and 10.30am-dusk at weekends. Admission is free.
