Sense of Place
What's YOUR sense of place?
We've been asking for people across West Yorkshire to tell us about their Sense of Place, their way of life and their stories.

Gary Brown from Queensbury thinks Bradford is no longer what it once was.

I live in Dunedin New Zealand, but for many years I lived in Queensbury. I lived in West Scholes House as a child, for about ten or so years. I moved to the Bungalow at the top of Brewery Lane, near the Junction Inn when I was a teenager. The house was built in 1694, by William and Isobel Hill whose initials are over the front porch - partially obscured by the foliage.

My Dad worked for many years at the Queensbury Station.

The Bronte Parsonage in Haworth

The hamlet of West Scholes where we lived is within a few minutes of Burkes Wood. Here we used to play as children. A path through the wood and fields beyond leads to Thornton, where we used to go swimming, and taking a look at the Bronte's house sometimes.

We also went a lot to Haworth, to the parsonage. We went on the moors getting there on the bus.

I went to primary school at Foxhill. Climbing the track that led off from the road from West Scholes to Queensbury Clayton Lane. I then went to the Queensbury and Shelf County Secondary Modern School.

I would love to hear from someone who can remember me from the old days. In particular: Brenda Kershaw (Foxhill School and lived at Mountain I think and Pat Taylor my best mate, we lost touch many years ago. Pat lived at Lane Side Queensbury.

The good points of living near Bradford is the proximity of lovely countryside. a good bus service and lots of entertainment. Is the Skating Rink and Ten-Pin Bowling Alley still going strong? What about the Alhambra and the Mecca Locarno?!

I also lived also in Moore Avenue, with the bus stop outside the door.

Mum lived at Beacon Road, Wibsey, near the roundabout.

I used to work at Marks and Spencers in the late sixties. So hello to anyone who remembers me. Great staff meals and lovely place to work.

I still have a very broad Yorkshire accent, and though not strong on the dialect these days - there's a lot I do remember - put t' wood in t' hole - was tha born in a field!! Maybe not the correct spelling!

I have just watched "A Kind of Loving" the old version, with Alan Bates on TV today - must have been filmed somewhere in Bradford area.

Lots of love to the Bradford district, a special place.
