Alcohol and liver function

Alcohol and brain function
Alcohol affects the brain in several ways, it:
- slows reaction time
- causes difficulty walking
- can impair memory
- causes slurred speech
- causes changes in sleep patterns and mood, including increased anxiety and depression
Longer term drinking of excess alcohol:
- causes brain shrinkage
- leads to memory problems
- leads to psychiatric problems
- may result in the patient requiring long-term care
Human and financial costs of alcoholism
Alcoholism has social and economic impacts:
- there can be increased violence, antisocial behaviour and other crime associated with alcoholism
- there can be an increased risk of accidents
- there can be increased absence from work
- alcoholism can increase the likelihood of relationship break-ups
- alcoholism can cause mental decline
- alcoholism can increase treatment costs to the NHS
In many countries, drinking whilst pregnant is decreasing as awareness of the harm to the foetus that alcohol causes is increasing. Here is data from the Office of National Statistics (2018) showing the difference between pregnant and non-pregnant women aged 16-49.

The percentage of women drinking alcohol reduces significantly when pregnant. The rate of drinking alcohol when not pregnant has remained constant at around 50%. The rate of drinking alcohol when pregnant increased in 2016 and then decreased the year after.
The effects of alcohol on unborn babies
Alcohol can lead to a variety of physical, developmental and behavioural effects on the fetus. The most serious is foetusAn unborn baby. Usually eight weeks from conception. alcohol syndrome, where the foetus can:
- be smaller in size
- have a smaller brain with fewer neurones
- have long-term learning and behavioural difficulties
- have distinct facial features.
