This spike was made for the ground staff at an RAF base during WWII, and this one was issued to the current owner's uncle. It would have been quickly made by an engineer at the airbase and was intended to be attached to a wooded handle, like a broomstick, and used as a last line of defence. It shows how there was a lack of equipment during the war and sometimes, fearing that they would be invaded, people had to improvise weapons.
