Henry Francis Du Pont, founder of the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, was an avid admirer of the American Museum. Showing his support he donated a range of objects, including this magnificent Philadelphia highboy (1760-75). Carved from mahogany, this stunning example of craftsmanship stands at over 7½ feet tall. It is so large that when it arrived at the Museum it had to be lifted in through the windows at the back of the manor house.
