This ancient fireback has been in my wife's family for over 50 years. It's travelled with us as we moved from house to house. There are two larger ones which remain in a previous family home, mainly because they were so big and weighed so much.
Despite the size and weight, this one we were able to move and in the picture you can see the measuring tape showing the size.
I think that it is French because of the Fleur de Lys and crown which is the French coat of arms. There are palm leaves at the sides. The date is 1659. There are two other patterns or designs at the bottom of the palm leaves but you can't tell what they are anymore. It is very heavy and well used!

We have one too, bought in an auction in Leyburn, maybe 10 years ago. the pattern at the bottom appears to be a ribbon bow. there is another on "google " images which is a reproduction ---- so how would we date it?
