Bar manager Jean Evans, 61, of nearby Bathgate, said: "He was so honest and he was up front – he stuck by his principles, especially when he resigned over the Iraq war.

"That's what I really admire him for – for sticking up for something that he believed in. I think he was regarded very highly."
