At-a-glance: Rural housing
Second homes

The 1991 census estimated there were 125,000 second and holiday homes in England alone.

Ten years later the figure was more than 135,000 – 150,000 when Wales is added. Two-thirds of these are in rural spots.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors says that in 2003 nearly half the people buying rural property in England were non-farmers.
