Prosecutors in the Philippines say they are investigating evidence of a plot implicating the founder of the country's Communist Party, Jose Maria Sison, in a high profile murder.

Police say they have evidence that Mr Sison and at least seven other communist guerrilla leaders were responsible for the killing of a Congressman, Rodolfo Aguinaldo, in 2001.

Mr Aguinaldo and a bodyguard were shot dead in the northern city of Tuguegarao.

Police documents now in the hands of prosecutors say the Communist party's military arm, the New People's Army, claimed responsibility the next day.

Mr Sison now lives in exile in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, the government has repeated its call for Communist groups to accept a draft peace agreement to end their 34-year rebellion.
