In pictures: Taiwan air crash
A China Airlines plane disappeared from radar screens and crashed into the sea off Taiwan's west coast just 20 minutes into a flight to Hong Kong on Saturday.
More than 200 people were killed in the disaster. It was the Taiwan flag-carrier's fourth major crash in less than 10 years.
The arrivals screen at Hong Kong alerted relatives that something was wrong
But then they faced an agonising wait for news
The victim's families were flown to Penghu island near the crash site
It is a Taiwanese tradition to wave an article of clothing of a missing person to speed their return
But soon all hope of anyone returning alive was lost
More than 30 bodies have been recovered so far
Buddhist volunteers have been holding prayer services over the dead
While the operation to retrieve more bodies and debris continues
Every item retrieved must be carefully examined
While the relatives try to come to terms with their loss
